CBRetriever says:
under your Manage Your Kindle page there's either a Manage Your Devices choice or you'll see the kindle across the top of the page - select the kindle you want to delete and deregister it

A. Dietz says:
Deregister it, either from the settings menu in the device itself or from the Manage Your Kindle page on http://amazon.com.

I'm giving mine to my daughter. If I deregister it, will that remove all the books from the Kindle? Will it remove the books I've purchased from my account? I have a Kindle for PC account and plan to use that to read.

Miss Carol says:
It depends on which type of Kindle you have. If it's an e-ink Kindle, then no. Deregistering it doesn't affect what is on there until the person deletes those books from the device. Then they're gone. But if it's a Fire, then yes. Everything that belongs to the account will be disappear.

Missy James, If you're giving your kindle to your daughter and want to keep all the books you currently have, just go to your Manage My Kindle page and put her name on it. As long as it's associated with your Amazon account all your books will remain on it.

Dregistering it will NOT delete the books from your account.....in the case of the ereader Kindle, the books you downloaded will stay on the device until you remove them. I am not sure on the Fire if they stay on the device or not, but they are definitely still in your account, and can be downloaded again to any registered device

When you de-register a Fire, the content is wiped off.

@Missy James
Just to clarify the information that the other 4 folks gave you:

An eInk based Kindle (like the Paperwhite for example) => Everything remains on your account. Everything remains in the Kindle.

Any of the Kindle Fires => Everything remains on your account. All Amazon purchases are removed from the Fire.

I have only had my HDX for about a month or so...so have not had the need to deregister it. Does anyone know why the Eink Kindles KEEP the books, and the Fire doesn't? just curious.....

CBRetriever says:
different operating systems?

it's always been that way with the Fires
