Paperwhite (Wi-Fi) losing charge

I bought a Paperwhite nearly two weeks ago. I charged it up until the orange light turned green and the battery showed it was full. I noticed straight away that it was losing charge really quickly. The battery level indicator dropped by about 10-15% on the first day.

I read some things about not putting too many books on it, and checking to make sure that the Kindle wasn't still trying to index a book, and setting the light at about the half-way point. So I removed most of the books (left 17 books on the device), I turned the light off completely and I deleted the one book that the Paperwhite was still struggling to index. Great, I thought. I've solved the problem. I fully charged the device again, until the green light showed, then I checked finally to ensure that it was in 'airplane' mode, I put it to sleep and I left it on my desk for the weekend.

I came back into the office, yesterday, to note that the Kindle had lost about 20% of its charge. I charged it up again, and just in the last few hours the battery level indicator has again started to drop.

I haven't taken it completely to empty, yet, but at this rate I should think it would be dead within ten days, even being left in sleep mode.

I'm going to assume it's a faulty battery, but looking around the web, this doesn't seem to be a common complaint at all. Are there any other possibilities that I'm overlooking?

Do you keep Wi-Fi turned off when you're not using it? Airplane mode should be ON in order for Wi-Fi to be disconnected.

Because it's already looking like a hardware failure, why not just contact Kindle customer service for a replacement? In fact, if you bought it from Amazon and you decide you want to return it, you're half way to the end of the 30 days and, again, you'd have to contact CS.

Click the blue Help link near the top center of this page, then the yellow Contact Us button on the right. Choose Live Chat or Call Me, not e-mail.

I keep the Wi-Fi switched off, so I know that isn't an issue. Airplane mode is definitely on.

I bought the device from a local retailer, not directly from Amazon. I'm in Hong Kong, right now, and Amazon won't ship Kindles to Hong Kong for some reason, so my attempts to buy one from the official on-line store failed and I had to go local. The local retailer has its own warranty system but I contacted them, this morning, and it looks as though their warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on (I've found consumers have very few legal protections in Hong Kong). Does Amazon have a separate warranty process that would cover this? I'll contact CS to see what they can advise.

Amazon's 1 year limited warranty covers any Kindle, regardless of whether you buy it directly from them.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. Really quick and really helpful! So CS tells me that my Kindle is a Japanese model. I've just sent an e-mail to the Japanse CS because they haven't got a working chat function at this moment. Great to know about the one-year warranty. It's a real weight off my mind.

Tragically, say my Kindle isn't covered by the Amazon warranty as it wasn't bought in Japan. Looks like I'll have to try again to see if I can get any traction out of my local retailer. Sad day.
