Dead Pixels?

When I first received my Kindle Paperwhite, one of the lights at the bottom was brighter than the others, making the lighting uneven and blue-tinted. I also noticed what appeared to be a dead pixel by the % at the bottom right.

I received a replacement one no problem and upon observation noticed that the lights were even and for the most part my problem that I had on the first one amazon sent to me was gone. Unfortunately, I noticed what appears to be another dead pixel at the top of the screen right above the first line of text in a book. It's just a tiny, bright dot. When reading at certain angles and certain lighting conditions it's very easy to miss, however sometimes my eyes do see it as I scan across.

Maybe I am just being picky, but are dead pixels a regular issue on e-ink kindles. It's very minor yes, but when it is something brand new, you expect zero imperfections. I do not think I plan on going through the replacement process again, at least not just yet, I just want to know if this is a widespread issue and why it occurs. Thank you.

Actually the bright dots are not dead pixels, they are imperfections or particles between the screen and the light guide. That said, although we've seen a few reports of them here they don't seem to be common.

Well it's pretty inconvenient to have your replacement one have this imperfection as well. And now it is in a much more noticeable place. Should I go through the replacement process again or just deal with it? I can replace as many times up to a year correct?

I, too, have a dead pixel on my PW but it's barely noticeable and so I've decided to keep it (my personal choice).

If you have dead pixels, in my opinion, you need to replace it for as many times as you need to to get it right if it's that noticeable to you and bothers you (sometimes the replacement kindles are the ones that were sent back by others for whatever reason (I know this from personal experience for an earlier model Kindle I had to send back twice before they got it on the third try)).

I agree - if you aren't happy with it now, it isn't going to get any better. Odds are in your favor to get one with no problems. You should also be sure to tell CS why you aren't happy with that replacement - they may well have just turned around one that came back with the same complaint.

I've got a "dead pixel" on mine as well that I just got today. :( Disappointing. I'll definitely keep replacing it til I get a perfect one. I wouldn't be able to ignore the issue. It seems like sort if a common problem.

I also have a dead pixel on the bottom right of my PW. Contacted CS by chat and they told me that it was defective and needs to be replaced. (After doing a reset). I was worried that the dead pixel area may increase in size over time. A new one is arriving on Thursday.

I was worried they were going to tell me I'm crazy, but the associate seemed to trust me as the Kindle was still resetting when the exchange was made. The screen had the "boy under tree" image while I was at the store, and the "pixel" wasn't clear to see as it wasn't against any black in the image. Also, the screen lighting did seem uneven on the first model, so we'll see what the second model looks like.

Hopefully I get what was promised, Amazon!

I talked to Amazon on chat about mine today, and they're sending a replacement. So yeah, hopefully this one is good.

I like mine so much that, if worse came to worst, I could handle uneven lighting and a "dead pixel" and still enjoy it, but I'd rather it was perfect. The Kindle Keyboard had some weird stuff going on with it, too, with the plastic lifting up off the screen. My Kindle Touch was rock-solid, but I hated the design and how far recessed the screen was. I really like the Paperwhite a lot. Don't know who they're fooling with the picture-icon representations of books, though. That's a really, really slow way to cycle through things unless you only own 20 books. Even the list view is rather slow for me, unfortunately, because I have so many books!

Glad yours turned out! Mine should be here Wednesday, hopefully with the same results. :) They're letting me keep the defective one until the new one arrives.

That was the case with mine, too, a bright dot. It's too bad this had to happen to such a good product. Amazon has to be losing a fortune.

i took replacement because the older paperwhite was constantly rebooting .. the replacement also did the same .. then i realized it is a specific book sold on amazon (for free) that was causing this problem .. i had to remove the book from USB and then it started working. Since this is a replacement one i decided to keep it .. i returned the old one .. I did see a bright spot or dead pixel or whatever pretty much in the center .. but frankly its not that bothersome .. it is a micro spot.. i think i will keep it .. Though this one has a better lighting below .. the other one gave darker areas below .. this one is also darker below but it is even. Looks like everyone is ordering a replacement .. so how do i order a replacement to a replacement :)

Don't know if I ever updated to say that my new one is perfect. Amazon CS was a pleasure to work with, as they normally are. I used the chat function since I hate talking on the phone. :) Worked really well!

I just bought my new Paperwhite at Best Buy and I have about 5 "dead pixels." It's going back tomorrow and I'll be sure to open it before I leave the store to make sure I don't get another faulty one.
