my kindle screen cracked. when i brought it back to the store I was told that the warrenty does not cover cracked screen. I would be better off buying a new kindle as the cost of a new screen would be the same price as a new kindle.has anyone replaced a screen cheaply?

L. LEVERTON says:
If you call amazon they will most likely replace it free if it is under warranty. You can't replace the screen, there are no repair centers. FOr a fire, amazon charges 100 for a replacement due to cracked screen, but on the eink kindles, they have been replacing them free. THey replaced mine twice free.

Contact Amazon's Kindle Customer Service: go to http://www.amazon.com/kindlesupport and click on the yellow "Contact Us" button, enter your Amazon account e-mail address and password, and proceed. Amazon might replace your Kindle, or at least offer you a good price on a factory refurbished Kindle.

You don't need to talk to them by phone. Choose "Chat" which is basically instant messaging/email. I suggest you contact them during normal U.S. business hours for best service, even though they are available 24 hours.

I also had the same problem with my Kindle. I contacted them through Email and then on the phone. Since I am living in Sierra Leone, the guy at Amazon told me to send it to the person in England who bought it for me and it will cost me $ 40 to have the screen replaced. My friend just asked me not to send it (postal cost + replacement fee), he will instead buy me a new one.
@ L. LEVERTON, I am today surprise to read that the screen can be replaced for free, yours being replaced twice.

Mine has broken twice and both times Amazon sent me a new Kindle (they were still under warranty. ) They will also provide you with a UPS shipping label to send the broken one back

I had to send my Kindle in to be replaced due to internal issues. How do I get all of my books that were on there? I have them on my IPad but not sure how to make sure they appear on the new device when I get it. Does it automatically download them once I register it or do I just lose those books? Thanks for the feedback.

I had the same problem, I kept my kindle under my pillow and accidentally put too much pressure on the screen during the night causing it to crack, called up amazon, the rep was super helpful and said I will get a new one in 3 to 4 business days. I have to send the old one back with a free shipping label they sent over the email. Thumbs up to amazon for great customer service!

I hope you've learned not to keep your Kindle under your pillow! Glad Amazon is replacing your cracked one.

Some people really love the passive voice. "The Kindle screen cracked." It saves saying, "I cracked my Kindle screen."

Kindle Keyboard [3rd gen] and plain Kindle 4th gen E-Ink screens are readily replaceable, replacement screens and the tools needed are available on ebay from china & there are so-so (IMHO, the people who posted 'em should have practiced before turning on the camera...) how-to's on youtube.

[Kindle Paperwhites far less readily, and Touch I wouldn't know]

Current prices run 39-50 USD for a new screen, free shipping. Import Duties and VAT, etc. don't apply here in Oregon, USA- so check first.

Not really for the technically challenged, but I've done 8 or 9 on our family's 5 Kindle Keyboards that are way out of warranty with a bit of care and patience- starting on ones bought used and pre-cracked.

There are also people on ebay who offer to replace screens- [not me!] IIRC they start about 95 USD, possibly including the screen. I imagine the price goes up a lot for the tougher ones, but since Kindle Fire screens are for sale- I would bet there are shops that replace them.

YMMV, I'm a disabled tech. And I keep at least one spare screen on hand.

My brother-in-law bought the Fire HD6 for each of my 2 grand-kids for Christmas
He didn't buy the extra insurance.
The 9 year old dropped his and the screen cracked. I spoke with Amazon and I'm so upset. They don't sell a replacement screen for this size kindle and you cannot even PAY to get it repaired. I'd be happy to pay for the repair, but they pretty much told me we're SOL.
Worst customer service ever.
I have a broken-hearted child and they won't even do a repair unless you bought the EXTRA insurance. And from what the "service" rep told me, they have no plans to sell the replacement screens either. So my little guy has a $99 paperweight.
BTW -- it actually still works, but you cut your fingers to ribbons from the broken glass.

Artist says:
Amazon doesn't fix screens because it's not cost effective. You might as well buy another HD6 -- it would cost about the same. It's not just a simple glass replacement.

King Al says:
That is not poor customer service. It is simply not cost effective to fix it.

Also, they don't repair Kindles even if you buy the insurance.
