I have no idea if this happened because my new Kindle PW shipped today, but I checked my "manage kindle" page and it shows that I have 11 new dictionaries scheduled to download to my kindle.

I don't want 11 new dictionaries... lol Why did this happen? Does anyone know?

The dictionaries don't download to the device. They're part of you account (since the device is multi-lingual) and available for download if you want them. You can't keep them from being a part of your account. If you delete them, they will just come back.

Just think of them as part of your Kindle's operating system and ignore them.

I didn't see 11 dictionaries on my account after my paperwhite had been shipped, but I saw a couple of different Chinese/English dictionaries! It doesn't bother me though, I was just a bit surprised.

They are in the Cloud, not in the device and you don't have to download them if you don't need them. But they are free and pretty useful if you read ebooks written in a foreign language.

I deleted the dictionaries from my amazon account on my computer and they have't returned.

If you delete them from MYK they don't come back.

But what unimaginable riches - ELEVEN dictionaries! :-)

Artist says:
Maybe that's something new, because with the other two devices that had foreign language dictionaries, the dictionaries would come back even if you deleted them from MYK.

I have a KK, and the (German, I think, from memory?) dictionary that came with it didn't come back after I deleted it. In fact, the reason I don't remember what it was is because I deleted it before the kindle actually arrived, and it never showed up again.

usually they come back with an update

Nope, it hasn't. I just searched my MYK library. That would be almost exactly 18 months it hasn't come back.

It's not that I think the extra dictionaries are a bad thing at all. It's just that the new PW has 2g less available on-board storage space than my KK. With that being said, every time I turn on the 3G, on my KK, every thing in my cloud automatically downloads. I have yet to figure out how, if at all possible, to download only what I want. I am afraid that with the PW I'm gonna have that same issue.

I think the options for the cloud storage should offer an archive choice in the actions menu. I don't see myself reading anything in Dutch or Portuguese anytime soon, not to mention the 7 other foreign language options available (2 of the 11 are English). And if I were to need one, I'd like to download the one I needed and archive it when done.

Just a thought.

Just Peachy says:
Everything downloads or just shows up under "archives"? There is a big difference.

The foreign dictionaries do not download automatically.

CBRetriever says:
maybe they've stopped it or maybe it was the result of the two Kindle Touch updates that were so close to each other?

and Cloud books aren't actually downloaded to the kindle - you're just seeing the links to the books one ther server

Anything that I have purchased will auto send as soon as I turn on my 3G wifi.

Good to know about the dictionaries... thank you Peachy Pat. :)

Not if, when you purchase it, you select "send to cloud reader" rather than "send to kindle".

I know this is not the right forum for this topic... since I was the one that created this topic. lol does not give me the option to send any of my books to the cloud reader. I feel a little silly here, I should be able to do something this simple. What am I missing?

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 2, 2012 8:09:34 PM PDT
You won't be able to see the Cloud option if you're using Internet Explorer as your browser - need to use Chrome, or Firefox, for example.

Another option, if you don't want to mess with browsers, is to install the K4PC app on your computer and send any books you don't want immediately on the kindle to the PC instead (when you're first purchasing.)

I use Firefox... have for years. Ok, I will give that a try, too. Thank you for the help. :)

flipoid says:
Every time you purchase a book, D. Keithley, the default Kindle will be in the pull-down menu that's right under the "Buy with 1-click" button. It says "Deliver to:" and you can choose the options. The e-ink Kindles are listed alphabetically, if you have more than one Kindle registered to your account. One of the options (but I am pretty sure you have to actually set up/register the cloud reader on the computer you're using) is "Kindle Cloud Reader." If you send it to the Cloud Reader, it won't automatically be sent to your PaperWhite.

Awesome! I love it when I learn somethin new!! Thank you Miss Mitford and flipoid! Y'all have been so very helpful! Yay! I'm a happy woman tonight. LOL

I've used Firefox (and before it, Netscape) for so long I forget those little differences. But I remember someone saying that once you've sent to the cloud reader once, using Firefox or Chrome, it does show up in IE after that.

I have more space available on my kindle than in my computer at the moment, so I don't choose to send to K4PC unless I really want it there :-)

Amazon inserts not only foreign dictionaries into my library every couple of months but also foreign language versions of the kindle manual. I delete them (because they keep me from easily scanning the list of books I actually bought and want to see), but they keep coming back. I called about this and the tech folks acted like they didn't know what I was talking about. Maddening indeed. This did not happen with previous Kindles - only with my PW.

John says:
This being my first Kindle I deleted them twice and they are now back again. I wasn't aware they were part of the OS... so to speak. It's not a huge deal but it is annoying in the way it mucks up my list. There should be an archive feature for these and books you don't need to see in your "now" list.

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 3, 2013 9:53:28 AM PST
they're not on your Kindle, just listed in the archive. (there already is "an archive feature"). As you accumulate more items in your library, these older items will be pushed to the back, you wont see them unless you go looking for them.
Have you read the User's Guide that came pre-installed on your new Kindle?
