I was out in the boonies this week and knew that I would not have WiFi so I took my K2 because it uses 3G. I showed a good connection (4-5 bars) but it said that it was 1X. It would not connect to the browser but would connect to the Kindle store. I assume that 1x is slower and or weaker than 3g. Sometimes it would show 3g after I connected to the store but as soon as I tried the browser it reverted to 1x. I just wanted to check email. It did download items sent to my Kindle email address.

Any way to force 3g or make the browser work at a slower speed?

If you were far enough out in the boonies, there may not have been 3G available, just the older 1x. You can't "force" 3G if it ain't there.

I was not thinking about forcing 3g but getting the browser to work on 1x. The amazon store works pretty fast on 1x. I think that Amazon has crippled the browser to discourage usage of 3g except to access Amazon.

Books are tiny files. Browsing the web and accessing email takes a lot more bandwidth and my not be available if you don't have full 3G service. Amazon didn't "cripple" anything.

"Any way to force 3G?"
"I was not thinking about forcing 3G"

Make up your mind.

That browser has been "crippled" since day one.

I had a 3G KK and lived on the "edge" with AT&T. The browser would work...if I were patient enough to wait the 10 minutes it took to load.

Do you mean that it will connect if I just let it try long enough? It told me "unable to connect at this time. Try again later CANCEL" If I left it there would it eventually connect?

I still do not understand. It said that it was connected to the Amazon store at 3g but went to 1x as soon as I tried the browser so 3g was available. My ATT phone got a good 3g signal and at least in the past Amazon was using ATT. It seems like if was connected 3g to Amazon it should be able to connect 3g to the browser or at least operate the browser 1x.

It looks to me like Amazon only wants us to connect to the store.

What we mean is don't try to use the experimental browser. It's has never worked very well and it will only frustrate you. It's called "experimental" for a reason.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 13, 2014 3:03:46 PM PDT
And if you have an older model of the K2, then it uses the Sprint network. I wouldn't use that experimental browser unless my life depended on it and every other gadget I had wasn't working - like my smartphone.

And since you were getting a good signal on your phone, why didn't you use that?

My phone is a phone not a $70/month computer in my pocket. It is a prepaid phone which costs me about $100/year. I have a computer available 95% of the time.

If it said "unable to connect," I'm sure that is what it meant. I'm sorry I was not helpful.

What did Customer Service say?

Edited to ask, "Does the AT&T data coverage map on the AT&T site say that you should get data in the "boonies" where you went?

It is interesting. I just tried to connect the K2 at home where it has worked in the past and I get the same results as I got in the boonies. I guess that I should call customer service but they only seem to be able to help on the phone and my my hearing is bad and talking to someone with a foreign accent makes it almost impossible to communicate. That is why I avoid the phone whenever possible.

Try using the live chat instead. It's slower, but it should work for you.

I contacted CS via chat a week ago. That only worked for a short time until the only way to solve the problem was by phone. I was told to reset to factory defaults. As I knew it would it removed all content. It also removed the kindle email address so that I can no longer send documents to this kindle. That means that I can no longer send news feeds generated by Calibre as I have been doing. So far I am worse off than I was before and the tech team which was going to get back to me in 2-3 days is MIA. At this time I am waiting for follow up on two issues. (1) Cannot connect the browser (2) no kindle email to send documents to the K2.

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 28, 2014 10:22:16 AM PDT
The factory reset, just gave you a different email address. Go to your Manage your content and devices, click on the devices tab and find the new email address.

Vickie. Not true. It removed it and no way to restore it or get a new address. Even the CS rep could not get to it. It is just not an option on either the K2 or the MYK site.

CBRetriever says:
if he can't connect via 3G, then likely it isn't registered and has no email address

Posted on Jul 28, 2014 11:24:21 AM PDT
Gordon says:
I am registered. I can send things from MYK or go to the store and send books to the Kindle. I can get to the store from the store option on the menu but cannot go to the store from the browser. The kindle email option is just not available on the K2 or the MYK.

Customer service should be able to fix your email problem.

Susan. It would seem so but after spending 1 1/2 hours on the phone with them last week they still have not solved the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like he is attempting to access his email through the experimental browser on an e-ink reader. I don't recall anyone having much luck with that even when there was good reception. I can't imagine trying to do it out in the boonies. It's been called an "experimental" browser for years for a reason.
