Mike says:
You don't turn one on and the other off. When airplane mode is on, you have no wireless connection. When airplane mode is off, wireless is on. If you are where you have access to WiFi, it will default to WiFi. If not, then it will use 3G if you're in range.

KathyL says:
Go to settings then wi-fi networks. Select the wi-fi network that is checked. A text box will appear asking if you want to forget the network. Select "Forget." Wi-fi will turn off and 3G will turn back on.

The next time you want to use the wi-fi network, though, you'll need to go back through the process to select it, sign in with your user name, and enter your password.

PS56k says:
what is your question or situation -
Any Kindle with BOTH the 3G option, and the default built-in WiFi will treat them the same as "wireless" - first trying the WiFi connection, and then attempting the 3G as a last resort. The icons should reflect this condition.
