My Kindle paperwhite starts up by itself usually in the middle of the night.

It's turned off when I go to bed and then in the middle of the night the thing starts up by itself. The bright light wakes me up. What's going on?

CBRetriever says:
are you turning the wireless off?

No. How do I shut it off?

CBRetriever says:
Menu - Settings - Airplane Mode and turn it on

Airplane Mode on = wireless off
Airplane Mode off = wireless on

I always turn mine off on all my kindles when I put them to sleep - it's a good habit to get into

I never turn my WiFi off and my Paperwhite doesn't wake up by itself. I know it's a silly suggestion but if it were me I'd contact Kindle Support.

@Jack: Is it in a case or cover? Take it out for a few days and see if that helps with the problem.

How well did you know the people from whom you bought the house?

Mine did this last night too. I usually have airplane mode enabled, but didn't last night for some reason. I was woken at 2 am with a shining light - my kindle! Did they not think through that turning a lighted device on at random times might be a problem?

I swear my televisions do this every once in a while. They flash on and off very quickly.

I think they're possessed.

Just Peachy says:
I don't think they designed it that way. Mine has never come on by itself as far as I know.
I would do a reboot -- while it is unplugged, hold the power button down for 20 to 30 seconds.

My Kindle Paperwhite is permanently in airplane mode. Every morning at 12:59 a.m., it turns on at full brightness, whether it's in sleep mode or powered off.

I have no idea how to stop this, but it's damned annoying. I've taken to keeping my Paperwhite upside-down on a pillow when I go to sleep, just so the light doesn't wake me and my husband.

My Kindle Touch did this for a while after I had a preorder come in. I think some code was downloaded with a sync that kept checking for the preorder arrival every night even after I had received it. It was also turning WiFi on and leaving it on. With the Kindle Touch, a 30 second reset fixed it.

I did not have Special Offers so I knew my problem was not related to receiving those.

Now this would make me a little paranoid. Airplane mode should keep it from connecting to anything. Big brother, anyone?

K. Braden says:
Yesterday morning, I did a full reboot, and then updated to firmware 5.3.5, which caused another reboot. I immediately put the Paperwhite in airplane mode.

I can confirm that tonight, at 12:59 a.m., it powered on again. It remains in airplane mode, so it's not contacting anything.

I think that the Kindle is programmed to try and contact Amazon to refresh its special offers at 12:59 a.m.

When I had my Touch, I'm sure it used to turn on wireless by itself in the middle of the night. I always kept if off, but whenever I checked, it was on. I'd turn it off, then the next day it would be on.

Soulrider says:
It's simply Jeff Bezos' Kindles (Agents) turning on to make their evening report back to their "Master". They report on all they've observed during the day along with a history of your usage habits..what you've read, watched, listened to...talked about... The light is turned on for all models although it's only the newer models with cameras that make use of this. They need the light to send snap-shots of their current surroundings. Their master likes to get an idea of what the settings are like where his agents are deployed. So, everyone, sleep tight in knowing that your wonderful new Amazon content consumption device is devoutly making its nightly reports on everything you do. Oh, and for those of you somehow blocking the light from your Kindle at night, please don't do that, Mr. Bezos doesn't like it. Trust me, you don't want to upset Mr. Bezos. Should you significantly upset Mr. Bezos in his endeavours, he might just turn on some Kindle features you really don't like.

Please note: The above was written in jest, please don't take it seriously. Your Kindles are not reporting back to Jeff Bezos. Really, they're not...

My Paperwhite woke me up last night by turning itself on and blinking a number of times. I could not turn it off. I'm sure I turned it off when I was done reading, and it was definitely in airplane mode. I've had the device since last December, and this is the first time I've noticed this. I'm in the process of rebooting it now.

My husband's Paperwhite did the same thing in the middle of the night last nite. Very bright light. I had to go try to figure out how to put it to sleep. Very annoying.

Queue the Twilight music.

Perhaps there was an update pushed out last night. Or maybe a preordered book?

George says:
Both of ours do it... at almost exactly 4am EST.

Extremely annoying. Interestingly, it seems to come on on at full brightness regardless of what the brightness was set at. Always in airplane mode.

Mine (kindle keyboard) can't do this but my phone does this sometimes, when it's on charge and it turns on when it hits full charge. This may be irrelevant for kindles but just throwing it out there just in case...
