Welcome to Free books and Chat. come on in and browse through the links there are always lots of free books. Have a seat in our overstuffed chairs and put your feet up on the hassocks as you settle yourself in to read the latest treasure you've dredged up out of thousands of free indie publishers or perhaps you were lucky enough to catch one of your favorite well know author's book while it was free.

There's coffee, tea and hot chocolate in the decanters on the counter. Also on the counter there's a variety of freshly baked jelly and cream filled doughnuts apple fritters and I tripled the order of maple bars because they were so popular. Ice cold milk...whole lowfat skim, soy....and newly added delicious Almond milk...is in the fridge beneath.
Trick or treat candy bars...Hershey and Peter Paul M&M and Mars....I love Almond Joy and Snickers

Leo
Here is a little story I wrote and tonight...

Halloween is lurking nearby. Are you ready?.....

There are so many things that are greater than the sum of their parts. A microwave oven, tablet, laptop even your cell phone would just be pile of useless plastics, metals and silicon if they were broken down to their simplest parts. Of course there are always exceptions.

John Herding was thrilled when the news came that he had won a brand new Laptop, fully loaded with all the newest components it was a dream come true.
John had never won anything in his entire life. Time after time he filled out entry forms. He'd gotten notices that he'd won of course, but they weren't real. Someone was always there to jerk that fuzzy feeling of actually winning right out from under him. He'd gone to countless time share interviews. His voice and email boxes were overflowing with spam ads daring him to enter. This one was different. The laptop arrived on Fed ex truck along with a letter about the sweepstake he'd won. All he had to do was sign his name to the Fed ex guy's handheld tablet and the over four thousand dollar Mac Book Pro with all its bells and whistles was his.
The 15in Retina screen came to life as he pushed the power button and entered his personal information. He thought the fingerprint scanner was an awesome security measure. Some jerk on the el swiped his last laptop and he never saw it again.
"Steal this one, creep. Good luck trying to use it if you do." John laughed as he imagined a tat branded gang member slamming his fist through the screen.
John placed his index finger over the scanner, pulling it across, but he jerked his hand away at the last second. Blood drops fell from his fingertip as he shoved it in his mouth and sucked the warm salty liquid away holding his tongue against the cut until the bleeding stopped.
Curiosity won out over caution as he used a lighter touch to search the edges for the bur the sliced his finger. Five minutes passed as he rubbed the smooth metal surface over and over, before he gave up pushing the incident from his mind as if it hadn't happened.
The preloaded games grabbed his attention. ...Jail Break...a simulation game that set you as an inmate in past, present, and even futurist prisons.
Escape from Alcatraz was one of his favorite classic movies, so he pulled up the simulation and started the game.
Nine and a half hours later John closed the lid and set the computer on his nightstand. Yawning as he turned off the light, he just closed his eyes and drifted off to the world of dreams and man did he have a dozy.
He was stuck in Alcatraz and another inmate slammed his hand in the steam press. The pain was so real, it woke him from a sound sleep, only to wonder whether he truly was awake. The Mac Book was chewing on his hand, a forked tongue slurped John's blood not quite quick enough to keep some from soaking into his sheets.
John shook his hand, then bashed it against the wall. But like a pit-bull the Mac Book's jaws were clamped around his hand and nothing he did had shaken it loose.
Screaming at the top of his lungs, John fell his vision beginning to blur as the Mac Book continued up his arm. His mind making the leap from demonic laptop to vampires,¬¬-John was into all the new vampire stories. Incubi and succubae filling his favorite books and television programs-he stumbled to the kitchen and opened the fridge. He found what he was looking for on the bottom rack in the door-a half-full, quart bottle of fresh minced garlic. Turning the lid one handed with the aid of his teeth, he opened the jar and upended it onto the laptop.
Sizzling smoke poured from the Mac Book as it finally fell from his arm, leaving a bloody stump where his hand and wrist had been. Bleeding profusely, John cranked on the gas stove, stuck a plastic spatula between his teeth and rammed his stub into the flames cauterizing the open wound.
He didn't know how time had passed or how he got back into the bedroom as pain seared through his mind and body, stealing his senses. Only when it subsided, was he able to drag himself back to the kitchen to see what had become of his Mac Book. It seemed lifeless as he picked it up and turning it over found the service tag. It looked like any other except the bottom. Engraved in tiny letters it said. `Parts forged and assembled in Hell...'
The Mac book coughed then and spewed a bright green slime infused with tiny pieces of garlic.
He almost dropped it back on the floor, but he was afraid it'd attack his ankles next so he set the edge on the counter and pushed it closed, then he shoved it forward, wedging it up under the microwave oven. Huffing and puffing from the effort he leaned over to catch his breath, grabbing his left knee and banging his painful stub on the right forgetting already that he'd lost his right hand.
It took him a few minutes to recover enough to hunt down the convenient carry bag that came with his mew Mac Book.
Sliding the cover over the end, he shimmied the sides up inch by inch then turned it around to zip the case closed, the Mac book snapping at the fingers of his good hand as they neared the laptop's mouth.

Mac Book secure, John grabbed his coat and headed outside to do the only thing he could think to do with the demonic Mac Book.
He scurried the five blocks from his apartment to the el, bought a ticket and got into the last car. Setting the laptop on the seat, he exited the train at the next stop and headed home. "Go ahead." he said under his breath as he passed a pack of gang members just outside the station. "Make my day. Steal my laptop NOW."

Sally in SA says:
BY EASTERN WINDOWS : (Book 1 in The Macquarie Series)

Set in the beauty of Scotland, the magic of India, and the hostility of China, peopled with memorable characters of all races, By Eastern Windows is the story of a young British soldier, Lachlan Macquarie, posted to India where he meets Jane Jarvis, a young girl from the Caribbean - beautiful, different and exciting - who becomes the greatest love, and the greatest tragedy, of his life.

It is also the story of the young men who travelled with him, far from home, serving their King in a country they came to love, while coping with the complex differences between East and West.

This is the never-before-told story of Lachlan Macquarie's young life, before he later went on to become one of the most important men of his time; when, with extraordinary intelligence and a deep compassion for the inhabitants, he turned a neglected convict colony into a country, and named it Australia.

A highly rated Freebie to begin the new week . . .

THAT GIRL STARTED HER OWN COUNTRY (The Count of Monte Cristo) by Holy Ghost Writer - Mystery

International Playgirl Zaydee finds herself in the midst of a crisis fueled by international intrigue, multinational corporate greed, and a convoluted legal system. Imprisoned computer hacker, this brilliant jet-setter becomes an international media celebrity as she defends herself, an unknown girl labeled Princess Jane Doe, against false charges. With complicated and shadowy plots brewing, the book is lush and captivating and perhaps the best addition to the series yet.

I see that the Kindle App for IOS now has the collections feature.

I really hope that there will be an upgrade for the Kindle for Android devices which will also have collections.

I don't have a fraction of the number of books you all have but I am already finding it difficult to organise my books on my Kindle for Android App.

No problem with my Kindle Touch.

I also finished NOT FREE NOW Hardly Knew Her by Laura Lippman last night, I would give it 4 stars. It's a collection of short stories. You might want to check MYK, I think that this is the new ASIN, you may have it in your archives under a different ASIN (or I got it for free during my 3 days on the Canadian site, so I see no yellow banner on the US site when I look).

Thanks to everyone who wished me (and spouse) a belated Happy Anniversary yesterday! I'm a shy person who doesn't like too much attention, so I didn't mention it earlier. I just thought it was interesting that Wendy was also having her 34th anniversary this year. There sure are a lot of nice people on here!

And Brenda, Suze had her 35th.. I'm impressed with all of you..
When I hear of these long time marriages it makes me happy.

At the women's guild at church we always ask for Birthdays and Anniversary's.. Last month there was a lady that was
celebrating her 77th...

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 21, 2013 10:33:31 AM PDT
Hey Sandy.... That's so funny, I was just posting to Bren on Elephants III telling her that Suze just had her 35th also. LOL Celebrating 77 years is quite and accomplishment on so many levels.

I hope you are doing well today.... ;o)

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 21, 2013 10:39:41 AM PDT
Hey Bren... Thank you, I did sleep well thanks to my pal at the moment Sir NyQuil. I think we have a lot of shy people on this thread, but everyone is so nice and supportive that we feel comfortable with each other. I was a lurker for years before I started posting though. It's always nice to see you here.

I'm glad you and your husband had a great 34th too.

Wendy

My pleasure Donna.... So happy that I could contribute to your collection. LOL I wish it had been sparkly shoes though. ❤

As long as your nail polish is newly applied and you are well accessorized, of which I have no doubt, you are ready to kick some booty at that first tough work shift!!! ;o))
