What password are you using? It needs to be the security key for your wifi router.

I had the same problem, can't connected to WiFi at home, asking for password?, and I don't know what password they want, I don't have a password, my laptop can get online with the same Wifi at home and it doesn't need password.
Very frustrated and I shipped it back to Amazon for a refund.

Erlina, hope by now you have gotten on-line. The password they are looking for is the password to your wifi network. Many of us have the wifi carrier set the wireless up for us and never know the password. I had the password but was still getting an error message. In calling Kindle support finally, I found out that some of the Kindle Fire's went out from the manufacturer without the correct version of the softward installed. The correct version is 6.1 and my Fire had a 6.0 version. Once I had the correct version of software I was fine.

I've reset the device, router, and made sure I had the current version (6.1) and still no dice. I had no issues at mom's or uncle's house which both required a password. Now it won't work in my own home!!!

Zachary, is it possible you are entering the wrong password? I initially was using the password on the bottom of my router, but I forgot I had changed it. I had to reset the password, then success.

What if I don't have a wireless network in which to get onto Kindle Fire to set up an account?

Steve D. says:
I'm having the same problems. Even turned off the password on my wireless network and it still says that it can't connect to the network, yet the WiFi connect icon is on in the top corner.
It will not access the Kindle store.

This thing is crap. It won't do anything. It says it is connected yet will not let me do anything. It shows it is registered to me but if I try to start the dictionary or user's guide it says this application is not registered. Trying to register it now. Please try again in a few seconds...

This sounds like problems people were having yesterday - amazon servers were overloaded with millions of requests to register kindle/fire gifts. Try later.

My Fire connected without a hitch. I'm using a Verizon MiFi device as my WiFi hub; the first time the Fire connected, it required the password printed on the bottom of the Verizon MiFi hub. I gave it that, once, and haven't had a problem since.

I was having trouble connecting to the web (wasn't a password or internet issue) and clearing the data in the browser fixed my problem. Click this link to see how to do that -->

My Fire works at home w my wifi just fine, but when I try to go online w free public wifi at restaurants etc it says I'm connected but I can't actually go online. These are open connections with no password. Any ideas?

OK, a simple question. Can I use a Kindle Fire to access the Internet and run Apps without paying Amazon? I have my own wifi from AT&T at home and I use public hotspots with my laptop. I don't understand what their "cloud" or Kindle Fire eMail is, or for that matter Quickoffice...

so glad i found this site. i am not yelling i can't see good at all.
my brand new kindle fire hd refuses to let me go onlie either. i spent 3 hours with kindle, but finally was told to call my internet provider!
i too have serverl other devices that work just fine, just not my kindle it keep saying "authentcation failed.!!!

so i have to wait for verizon tomorrow as they have their chat services off!
they have messed with me so long, and the last person to help me had me go direvctly into my router so now i have no landline!

i am furious with kindle, and the way they have it set up. heck i had a acer 10 " that was they best buy i ever made, but some idiot knocked it off the table at star bucks, and broke the screne. and no he didn't offer to help pay for it.
this was when tablets just came out, and i paid close to $600 for it!
