Some interesting facts about the famous birthday guys and gals that you may not know:

BARACK OBAMA taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago from 1992 until 2004 and he also concurrently served three terms in the 13th District of the Illinois Senate from 1997 until 2004. In 2004 he ran for the US Senate and received 70% of the vote, the largest victory margin for a statewide race in Illinois history. He became the 5th African American to serve in the US Senate, only the third to be elected.

JEFF GORDON won his first of many Winston Cup Series Championships in 1995. He won his first Daytona 500 in 1997 and become one of the most successful race car drivers in the history of the sport. He became the first driver to reach $100 million in career earnings in the Cup series.

KURT BUSCH was a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver who was the 2004 Nextel Cup Series Champion and 2010 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race winner. He joined Stewart-Haas Racing in 2013. His father Tom also raced in NASCAR and his younger brother Kyle was the 2004 Busch Series Rookie of the Year.

ANTONIO VALENCIA is a winger who joined Manchester United in 2009 after spending time with Villarreal and Wigan Athletic. He helped Manchester United win Premier League titles in 2011 and 2013.

LAUREN TOM is best known as a voice actress on hit animated comedies, she played Amy Wong on Futurama and Minh & Connie Souphanousinphone on King of the Hill. Tom also starred in The Joy Luck Club as well as played Julie, Ross's girlfriend on the sitcom Friends.

RICHARD BELZER was the audience warm-up comedian for Saturday Night Live during the 1970's. Similar to his recurring character John Munch, on Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: SVU, Belzer has been married three times.

DANIEL DAE KIM has had the good fortune of starring in Lost as well as his current TV role Hawaii 5-0, both of which have been filmed in beautiful Hawaii. He is also the voice of Johnny Gat in the Saints Row series of video games. Earlier in his career he had recurring roles on TV series 24 and Angel. In 2011 he was included in the list of top 100 TV's Sexiest Men according to TVBuddy.

BILLY BOB THORNTON as a struggling actor picked up jobs in telemarketing, offshore wind farming, and fast food management. He rose to fame for his early role on the sitcom Hearts Afire. Famous former wives include Laura Dern and Angelina Jolie.

ROGER CLEMENS turned down pro offers out of high school and instead attended the University of Texas, where his number was later retired. He had four sons, all with names beginning with a K (Koby Aaron, Kory Allen, Kacy Austin, and Kody Alec) in honor of his strikeout prowess.

Does anyone know which of these birthday guys or gals were born outside the U.S.A.?

And no, I'm not looking to start any political debates today so President Obama is excluded from this question. ; )

I'll give you a hint, there are two individuals.

Morning, Cat. Thanks for the start!

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU WANT TO THINK SOME MORE ABOUT WHO WAS BORN OUTSIDE THE US. I love Daniel Dae Kim as an actor, and so know where he was born (South Korea). As I recall, for Lost he didn't have the "correct" Korean accent for the character. I think I know the other person but will leave it up to others.

What in the world does strikeout prowess have to do with names that start with "K"? I am feeling quite dense for not understanding this.

Tip,

I'm still here... or you could say I'm baaaack...

I don't know the answer regarding strikeout prowess and names that start with "K" either so you have company in the "dense" corner. I thought one of our posters-plurkers-lurkers might know and enlighten us thus generating some discussion. Baseball watching was another sport related activity that was forced upon me by my golfing grandparents, I took to that just as well as I took to golf in my youth. I'd watch the first inning and then be in the bedroom curled up with one of the many library books I'd bring with me when I'd visit them. They succeeded with my brother, he's quite the baseball fan.

SPOILER ALERT DISCUSSION: Daniel Dae Kim actually had to relearn Korean for the role on Lost since he had grown up in the US and he had spoken primarily English most of his life.

@ small.black.cat
Thank you for the great start today, with all the birthday info - sadly I have only heard of some of those you mention.
Love the quotes about Mondays, really sad that so many people are anti Mondays, I have never disliked them more than other days of the week, though of course it is sad that the weekend is over - the good news is that there will be another one :-)

Good morning red, I had a feeling that some of my international friends might not know the trivia. My apologies, it was not meant to exclude anyone.

I have only hated Mondays when I was younger and really didn't like a teacher I had or I really disliked my job. In reality it's all about how we perceive it in our minds just like so many other things.

I hope you have a fantastic start to your new week!

I know but I think it's too early to tell....
I will say that one is an actor and the other is in sports..

Don't worry I definitely do not feel excluded - it is all part of my learning curve here, I get enlightened each and every day.

The thunderstorm we had last night raged for quite some hours and delivered lots of rain, the earth was thirsty and has swallowed most of the water, but they have promised cloud-bursts today together with warm temperatures, so today I will compromise and wear my rain-jacket and have my trousers at the ready in my bag.
Last week of being on my own at work - so all is good

Thanks cat...
I did go spend the afternoon with mom and I don't think that she is as bad
as my cousin thought, but, I still think it is a good thing that she came home and has
appointments with both her primary care doc and her oncologist....
Their may be an issue with a new med that she was put on that she started taking the first of
July.. so, we will see... She hadn't made the connection...

Sandy, so glad to hear from you.

There's nowhere like home when you don't feel well, I'm sure your mom is relieved to be back. I hope her appointments are soon and are productive without too much additional follow-up required.

Meds can be tricky, nasty things which I know quite well from the hairs on my head to the tips of my toes lately. I didn't remember this until tonight but I believe after taking Cipro multiple times my paternal grandmother also had an allergic reaction to it when taking it one time. If it's the episode I remember she was quite uncomfortable as well. My recent insomnia issues are related to another med I am on and that I need to be on right now. I am trying to taper it down but I'm not getting very far. I would rather be on none!

I hope your mom's issue is as simple as a problem with the new med and they are able to replace it with something else. I didn't realize that your mom was being treated for cancer. Please forgive me if you have discussed it before, my memory is not as good these days. I am assuming she must be doing pretty well overall if she was able to travel down to FL and help out your sister. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I look forward to your special start tomorrow : )

cat.. Just a quick overview of moms cancer..
While on vacation in Ca. in Dec. 2011 she was in a car accident..
She wasn't really hurt but because of her age and medical history
she was taken to the ER to be checked out.. While being X-Rayed to
clear her of a spine or neck injury something "looked funny" on the X-Ray..
Cat scan was done and they discovered that she had lung cancer..

In March 2012 she had 1/3 of her lung removed and actually the cancer is gone
but of course you see the oncologist for years.. Just to make sure that it doesn't come back...
He is a Great Doctor and does what he does for the good of his pts..
Keeps on top of what all of the other drs. do for and with her... That's why she wanted to see him too...

We tease her all the time that she totaled her truck but saved her life because she really didn't have
any idea that she had a problem..
For a 80 year old lady.. She does a lot.... and has no plan to slow down or stop either..

In baseball, strike-outs are reflected on scoring sheets as "K" . . . not sure why. Some fans will hold up or post signs with "K" during games featuring pitchers who are known for strike-outs when the pitcher does strike out a batter.

Posted on Aug 4, 2014 12:56:35 AM PDT
From WikiAnswers:
The use of the last letter of Struck instead of the first to denote a strikeout dates back to when Henry Chadwick developed the box score in the late 1850's. Chadwick often used the last letter instead of the first, especially if he considered that letter to be the more prominent one in the word. Chadwick said "the letter K in struck is easier to remember in connection with the word, than S." He also used L for Foul and D for Catch on Bound. Only the K survived into the 20th Century. Source: Paul Dickson's The New Dickson Baseball Dictionary and Alan Schwarz's The Numbers Game. The common view that the K was used because the S was taken (by Sacrifice, Stolen Base, or Single) appears to be erroneous. Other answers from the community:'K' was chosen to represent Struck, because S was already taken to mean Stolen base. The K and S are both still used today.'K' is a StrikeThe symbol "K" is used because it is made with 3 strokes of the pencil, symbolizing the 3 strikes for the strikeout. Scorekeepers use a backward K (or a KL, or Kc) when a batter strikes out looking/called 3rd strike.K stands for 'struck'.
