Mom says:
I read an article somewhere that Amazon is doing away with the Kindle DX....I had just ordered one today prior to reading that article, and now I fear there could be no support for it in the future. Maybe I should return it when it arrives tomorrow............anyone know of this?

SeaLevel274 says:
My guess, and I suspect that of many others, is that they are selling the remaining stock and then that's it for the DX.

Miss Carol says:
What do you mean by "support"? Amazon will always support their products in the sense of answering questions about them and that kind of thing. None of the Kindles get repaired, so that isn't an issue.

By support I mean software updates.............

The DX is running 2.5.8, and hasn't been updated in quite some time. There is no reason to expect any more updates. The 2.xx firmware is pretty old. That version goes back to 2009.

It will work as advertised, there is no reason to worry. Amazon will honor the 12 month warranty.

Bixillarla says:
The DX is running 2nd generation software. It has not been updated since then.

They had discontinued it awhile back and must have found some more in warehouse and marked them down and put them back up.

There will be no further updates on the DX, it did not sell well and has been marked down 2-3 times to get rid of them.

How about the Kindle Keyboard, has it been phased out completely as well? That's the only Kindle ereader I have. It works fine. I don't see it on the amazon website anymore.

Yup the Kindle Keyboard was phased out when the Paperwhite came out.

The Touch is gone, too. I would not expect further OS updates, but I am sure Amazon will support the DX, etc, as they do others. If it breaks down while under warranty, they would probably give you a free Kindle (Basic), or PaperWhite, or offer you a discount on one of the Fires. That would amount to a software, AND hardware, update. You can always trust Amazon.

Like others have said, it's likely they are phasing them out. But comfort yourself that you got a great price on the largest eInk reader that will likely ever be produced! I've been considering one, I'm sure it will be superior to any other Kindle for PDFs, and magazines, if you don't care about color.

Which is precisely why I hold on to my DX even if I tend to use the Paperwhite on a daily basis.

Nothing beats it for reading pdf's

actually, the Kindle Fires might be better

M. Ratcheson says:
For reading PDFs? I haven't had a lot of luck with that on my Fire HD? It's a bit better than it is on on my eInk Kindles, but still way too small for my aged eyes to deal with. I might be overlooking some feature on my Fire.

CBRetriever says:
they can easily be zoomed and when you open one through ES file explorer using the kindle option works quite well and landscape mode is excellent

also there are pdf readers available

Peter Craine says:
By the way... on the "Compare Kindles" chart that's shown on the Kindle page, it says the DX has "Free 3G + Wi-Fi."

That's wrong, isn't it? The DX has never had Wi-Fi, right? (Although I did just find a teardown article from a few years ago that said it looked like it was wired to support Wi-Fi if it ever was offered.)

ETA: The chart on the Paperwhite page just says "Free 3G."

CBRetriever says:
yep, that's incorrect
