If we have an old MP3 player with music on it and in our computer, can the music be put into the Kindle fire?

You will have to transfer it from the computer not the MP3 player but yes MP3s play very well on the Fire.

Where did you buy those mp3s? If you bought them here at Amazon, or bought CDs here and ripped them - you might already have some of them available to you.. Go check out your Amazon cloud account and see if there isn't some music files there - if so, then you can stream them to your Kindle fire.

some of the music was converted from vinyl and from old, store bought CDs and from magnetic tape and tapes of radio programs, so, those would not have been bought at Amazon

You will need to copy them to your computer first. If they are in .mp3 format you should be fine. Once the .mp3 files are on your computer, you can connect your Kindle to the computer via the USB cable supplied with the Kindle. Once connected, the Kindle should show up under you list of drives as Kindle. Under Kindle there will be Internal Storage. Click on Internal Storage and you'll see a list of folders. Copy your MP3 files to the MUSIC folder. Then, from the Home screen on your Kindle tap on Music from the menu options at the top.
