Kindle for Windows 8

Is there anyone else out there who doesn't like the Kindle App for Windows 8? I received a new laptop for Christmas, and, of course, it was pre-loaded with Win 8. I found several apps already loaded on this little thing when I turned it on. One of those was the Kindle for Win 8.

Now, let me say also that I've been using the Kindle app for PC for years now, and I got a basic little Kindle for myself earlier in the year. The one thing I really loved was being able to keep my books, magazines, etc. all organized into collections. This is NOT an available option on the Win 8 app. I have to search through hundreds (literally) of titles to find a book I was reading.

On top of no collections, I can't even get my Kindle to sync properly with the app on the laptop. Very, very frustrating!

However, I've tried to see if I could just remove the app, and try downloading the kindle for pc. Not an option. As a result, I've found myself not using the app on my laptop. Would love to see this changed.

Am I alone?

If your new lappie is running anything other than Win8 RT, you should be able to open a browser on the desktop and download/install the regular version of the Windows app from here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000426311

Worked for me, anyway. I deleted the Win8 app and made a Metro shortcut to the Win7 app.

I have windows rt and it seems to work fine but there is no search within the book function which is extremely useful in a research/academic situation. Hard to understand why such a useful function would be left out. Is this due to Amazon or Microsoft?

There's no little magnifying glass icon on the left of the screen almost at the very top?

Not on my surface rt. There is no sidebar with the "go to", "search" and "Notes, Highlights" icons. You can access the functions other than the search function by swiping in to reveal a task bar at the top - but no search function. The charms bar allows you to search in titles in your library but not within the book --- I love to be told I just don't know how to find it, and then told how.

I have the kindle app for windows 8 pc. I would not recommend this for anyone that wants to read text books for school. It is slow, hard to navigate (no page numbers, no search, and must go to table of contents then flip through pages for vague chapter breakdown), has a different format than actual text book, and charts and boxes cannot be enlarged making them hard to read.

serenewhisper, lots of people feel the same as you (including me). The app is rated just 3 stars.

Try to get Kindle for PC if you are on an Intel Windows 8 laptop. If you're on RT then you're out of luck.

I have a Windows 8 PC. I pretty much hate the Metro interface. Why on earth is Kindle for Windows 8 a Metro app? I want a windowed view on the desktop so I can read my tech books right alongside the work I'm doing. I want to be able to send my personal documents to my PC kindle. If Amazon would like me to stick to using the Kindle and not some other reader, they need to fix this. (I do own a kindle, btw, but for some documents I'd rather use a PC reader.)

Bluegeek, if you go to the link R.D. Clark provided above, you can download and run Kindle for PC on your Win 8 PC. For me it works and Kindle for Win 8 does not.

I just purchased a desktop PC with Windows 8. The Kindle app that is pre-installed will let you search and see your notes if you right click on the book you're reading.

I really dislike the W8 kindle - like so many Microsoft updates over the years ("to improve your customer experience, we have disabled several of your favourite features and included useless bells and whistles"). Like others, I quickly loaded the version for PC and found everything from my kindle device etc (phew) - but just now realized I inadvertently purchased a book that is ONLY formatted for Cloud or K8. Former ultra-slow (lots of graphics), latter - well, see everyone's comments!!!
Come on Amazon, you can do better than this! Am disappointed, this is my first ever bad experience with this otherwise high-performing firm.

It is up to the publisher as to which devices they allow their books on. Amazon has no control over it.

or just use cloud reader, works great.

I notice there are no responses from Amazon on this thread. Amazon, like Netflix, makes it very hard to communicate with them about such problems. I have a Sureface Pro 2 and the most annoying thing about the app is that when I try to highlight parts of the text I get a page change instead. And, while I will take the suggestion to download the PC program, doesn't its use depend on a wifi connection? I carry my Pro 2 and my Kindle Paperwhite 3G everywhere, but when I want to read in color (cookbooks, graphic novels) I want to be able to use the Pro 2. Seems like this bug should've been worked out a long time ago.

The sad part about amazon's product marketing/development is they think they know what everyone wants, and won't listen to us. And then they abandon their customers/users who believed in them.
I've complained about their collections Kindle for PC since early 2013 that I would not even consider a Kindle Fire because it does not support collections, and what happens, the Win8 app comes out without collections. Just like the early Fire. ARGH They made the same mistake twice, despite knowing the importance of collections. One can only hope that a future release of the Win8 app will have collections function.

I had considered loading Kindle for PC onto my tablet, but the 8" screen would be tough to use, although I may do it anyway.

There is a way you can organize on Windows 8 using the following steps BUT that organization will only be on one computer and will not work with Windows 7.

Here are the steps:

1. When viewing a book in the Kindle Metro App, swipe from the bottom edge.
2. Click on the " pin to start "
3. Now go to the Windows 8 start screen and from there you can organize the book shortcuts into groups.

Of course it would make everything easier if Amazon had a DAMN UNIVERSAL CLOUD COLLECTION SYSTEM.

ouch
Yes Rich, that would work but that put everything up at the top level and that will get messy for those of us with LOTS of books on the win8 device. I have about 200 books on my win8 tablet and would LOVE to have them in collections, but not at the top level of the metro interface.

What I find frustrating about Amazon is they have a cloud collection, but you can't access the collections with their own cloud reader, to organize the collections in the cloud.

My impression is that no one at Amazon has really thought through the collections subject and how it should be organized and function overall, IOW the one guiding vision. Then get the various pieces (devices and apps) to line up behind that overall vision. It seems the the various device and application people/groups are doing things on their own. Like the win8 app ignoring collections completely, and their own cloud reader not being able to see or manage the cloud collections.
