Ode to s'mores

Oh the chocolatey goodness
dark, sweet, and secretive
melting over the puffy,
gooey, hot hot marshmallow
and closed in by a crunch,
that which holds it all together.
Oh, messy wonderfulness!
Oh, unbound glory!
All over my hands and face
and embracing my tongue
kissing my insides with its oozing deliciousness.

Bikini Day

Parisian fashion designer Louis Reard unveiled his original bikini design on July 5, 1946. To the delight of men on beaches everywhere, "Bikini Day" is celebrated each year to commemorate Reard's forward-thinking sense of style. Don't own a bikini? You can still celebrate by popping up some corn and settling in for a night of nostalgia by watching "Beach Blanket Bingo" or reruns of "Baywatch."

Workaholic Day

Each of us probably has one or two workaholics in our circle of friends. You may even be one yourself. These are the people who feel compelled to be working every waking hour, regardless of practicality or need. They take their laptops on vacation and can't finish a meal without checking their e-mail. I'm grateful for them, though, because it makes less work for the rest of us! You can celebrate "Workaholic Day" by breaking the cycle. Why not call in sick today or at least leave work an hour early? Spend the day getting a massage or simply lying in bed doing nothing. (Yeah, right ... that'll happen!)

Graham Cracker Day

Sylvester Graham was a Presbyterian minister who invented the graham cracker in 1829 to fight unhealthy cravings for things like meat and alcohol. Referred to as "graham bread" at the time, he surely had no way of knowing the culinary impact his humble recipe would have on the world. Preschool teachers and Girl Scout leaders around the globe owe Mr. Graham a great debt of gratitude. We honor him today by celebrating "Graham Cracker Day" on July 5 each year, the anniversary of his birth in 1794. Forget the birthday cake ... instead, get some chocolate bars, marshmallows and graham crackers and make the family a batch of S'mores! I'm sure Reverend Graham would be proud!

Morning Robb
Thanks for the start and teaching me more about how you Americans live, having masses of things to have a special day for, and now I see that there are so many that the special days get doubled up with others :-)
Of course I will ponder on S'mores (don't usually have to ponder about chocolate !) - well actually I had to because without your link I would never have known what they are LOL.
My bikini days are over but love that it is summer and the weather is good enought that others are using them.
Workaholic Day - been there done that, trying to cut down and looking forward to retirement a.s.a.p. but I will be leaving work an hour earlier since it is friday, yeah !
Graham Cracker Day - OK, well I will try to find some.... (or the Danish equivalent at least)

Thank you for the start Robb. I'm thinking I'm identifying more with the workaholic day versus the bikini day. Probably best for all involved. :)
Happy Anniversary Kindlana!

How can anyone not know what s'mores are :)

I just googled what national/international "day" July 5 was and up popped those 3. Actually there is a fourth but I gave it to Susan for Saturday.

Never have to ponder chocolate unless Lyn is involved and then it becomes dark vs milk because she can have dark but not milk. And there is a international S'mores day in August but how can you have something about graham crackers without s'mores?

Tips for providing a safe July 4th for your Canine Household:

1. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.

2. Keep your dogs inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. If it's hot, air conditioning will help. Bringing your dogs to a fireworks display is never a good idea.

3. Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can't orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas. (I once had a dog who climbed in the bathtub during windstorms.) If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option.

4. Keep the curtains closed, and if possible, also the windows.

5. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. (Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July.)

6. Leave your dog something fun to do - like a frozen Kong filled with his favorite treats.

7. Sound Therapy: Through a Dog's Ear is specially designed classical music clinically demonstrated to calm canine anxiety issues. The Calm your Canine series has even replaced drugs for thousands of dogs on July 4th. Downloads are available.

8. Desensitization combined with Sound Therapy: The Canine Noise Phobia series includes the above mentioned music along with progressive sounds of fireworks and positive reinforcement training protocol by Victoria Stilwell.

What Women Don't Want by Francene Carroll
Publication Date: June 23, 2013
When six women from very different backgrounds are brought together in a market research focus group none of them expect to gain much from the experience.

There's Ainsley, the beautiful focus group leader who has cruised through life on her looks, Neda, the Iranian refugee trying to come to terms with a new culture, Christine, the single mother raising three kids on her own, Olivia, the marketing graduate desperate for a job, Charlie the `bogan' from a public housing estate, and Sarah, the well-heeled feminist academic with an unusual area of research.

Over the course of seven weeks each woman learns something important about herself as the group engage in lively debates about what women really do and don't want.

What Women Don't Want is a 25,000 word novella (80 pages).

Tips for providing a safe July 4th for your Canine Household:

1. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.

He went on a 5k early this morning and spent time this afternoon with Adonis running around.

2. Keep your dogs inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. If it's hot, air conditioning will help. Bringing your dogs to a fireworks display is never a good idea.

He is kept in though we did take Derek to the fireworks. He survived and had no more problems with fireworks. AC? He doesn't particularly like fans.

3. Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can't orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas. (I once had a dog who climbed in the bathtub during windstorms.) If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option.

Crate? That would drive him crazy. He just likes to cuddle extra extra closely.

4. Keep the curtains closed, and if possible, also the windows.

Normally are closed. Neighbors :)

5. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. (Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July.)

Not allowed out after 8. Microchipped but I do need to retag him since he managed to lose his id tag.

6. Leave your dog something fun to do - like a frozen Kong filled with his favorite treats.

He destroys ALL toys including kongs.

7. Sound Therapy: Through a Dog's Ear is specially designed classical music clinically demonstrated to calm canine anxiety issues. The Calm your Canine series has even replaced drugs for thousands of dogs on July 4th. Downloads are available.

May have to look into that.

8. Desensitization combined with Sound Therapy: The Canine Noise Phobia series includes the above mentioned music along with progressive sounds of fireworks and positive reinforcement training protocol by Victoria Stilwell.

Wonder if it would work with motorcycle sounds.

Thanks for a great start today. I hope you're enjoying your visit and Lyn is keeping her promise! ;-)

Yellow Crocus: A Novel
In 1837, Lisbeth Wainwright is born to the white mistress of a sprawling Virginia plantation. Seconds later, she is delivered into the arms of her black wet nurse, Mattie. For a field hand like Mattie, her transfer to the big house is supposed to be considered an honor-except that the move tears Mattie away from her beloved grandfather and her infant son, Samuel. But Mattie is a slave, with no say in the matter, and so she devotes herself to her master's daughter, though she longs to be raising her own child. Growing up under Mattie's tender care, little Lisbeth adopts the woman's deep-seated faith in God, her love of music and black-eyed peas, and the tradition of hunting for yellow crocuses in the early days of spring.

As the years pass, Lisbeth is drawn slowly back into her white parents' world and begins to learn the ins and outs of life for a high-born young lady. Still she retains her connection to Mattie, befriending Samuel and drifting comfortably between the two worlds. She accepts her parents' assertion that their slaves depend upon them for guidance and protection, yet that notion becomes more and more difficult to believe as she gains awareness of the inequality of life in the big house versus the slave quarters. When, on the threshold of her society wedding to debonair Edward Cunningham, Lisbeth bears witness to a shockingly brutal act, the final vestiges of her naiveté crumble around her. Just twenty-one years old, she is forced to choose between what is socially acceptable and what is right, a decision that will change her life forever.

This compelling historical novel chronicles young Lisbeth Wainwright's coming-of-age during one of the most difficult chapters of American history. Lisbeth's powerful bond with Mattie makes her loss of innocence in the face of society's ugly secrets all the more heartbreaking, and yet it is the courage she learns from her stand in mother that enables Lisbeth to blaze a new path for herself. Yellow Crocus offers moving proof of how the greatest social change often blooms forth from small personal acts of love.
