I bought a book today and It wouldn't let me use the text to speech feature. This is a first out of the 100's of books that I have. It gave me a sample of the book with professional narration and said if I wanted the rest to be read in thisformat to click a button on the side to have professional narration. I didn't want to be charged for this, so I went to the website and it said the cost was 9.99.

What book?

Is this going to Amazons new policy? Suck us in with the text to speechj and then change little by little all the books to audible or other paid services?

Text-to-speech and professionally narrated audio books are two totally separate things. Not all books have text-to-speech enabled. When you look on the product page for a book you need to look for "Text-to-speech: Enabled" like here:

Product Details
File Size: 867 KB
Print Length: 387 pages
Page Numbers Source ISBN: 0545425115
Publisher: Scholastic Press; Reprint edition (September 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0439023483
ISBN-13: 978-0439023481
ASIN: B002MQYOFW
Text-to-Speech: Enabled <------------ Look for this
X-Ray: Enabled
Lending: Not Enabled

A professional narrated book will be an audio book, not a Kindle book, so be sure you're looking at the Kindle edition of the books you're interested in.

Some books have TTS disabled. It's a decision made by the publisher. I generally don't purchase a book if TTS is disabled. You can see this on the product description page under Product Details and before the Customer Reviews.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 5, 2013 1:34:04 PM PST
No. This is a publisher decision and it's been around all along. Nothing new.

Given that this is ONE book "out of the 100's of books" you have, and given that Amazon has just purchased Ivona, the software company that provides the tts voice used on the Fires, I think you're jumping to completely unwarranted conclusions.

This is too bad that you cannot purchase combined text/narrated books for Amazon Kindle. This feature is so helpful to new readers, the print disabled and foreign language learners.

Uh ... you ... can. www.audible.com

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 26, 2013 11:07:54 AM PDT
Pretty much no beginning reader or language learner in the world is going to want to listen to text-to-speech as an aide. It's monotone and does NOT pronounce many words correctly.

Audible only has audio books, no text, I meant books with simultaneous display of text with audio either human or TTS

Actually people with reading disabilities and kids who are new readers are very excited to have TTS as a tool and don't complain.

J. L. Leech, the apps do not support TTS.

Tink says:
This is the Immersion Reading. It synchronizes an ebook with an audio book, thereby using the audio book narration instead of the TTS. If you already own both, you get the audio book following along the highlighted text instead of the TTS. I had one book I was offered the upgrade on, I skipped it and stuck to TTS. I do, however, have several books in both formats and my Fire HD auto downloads the audiobook and uses that along with the highlights instead of TTS.

There was likely an audio book available, and you were offered the choice of upgrading to the professional narration. A far better choice. I use TTS out of necessity and previously, audio books for quality. Immersion Reading gives you the option of both, likely at a similar or less expensive price to audio books.

Artist says:
Georgia, if the book is TTS enabled, you open the book, press the Aa Key, and turn on TTS. If you press the Aa key again, you can change the speed and/or the gender of the voice.

If the turn on button is grayed out, then the book is not TTS enabled.

I used to have TTS on an earlier Kindle, but when I look for it on my Kindle Paperwhite (via the Font setting, or Settings of any sort), I cannot find it. Very frustrating, as I am 83% through a book that lists on Amazon as Text to Speech Enabled, & I am in between cataract surgeries and need a temporary audio substitute. I cannot find reference to it in a Guide, but of course I am visually challenged right now, and extended use of lopsided vision is tedious. Does the Paperwhite NOT have TTS capability?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 9, 2013 8:13:52 AM PST
The Paperwhite does not have TTS or any audio capabilities for that matter.

Laurence says:
I only have time to listen to books but so frequently newish books and many older ones are not available on Audible.com. I would be willing to purchase Kindle versions of these books IF and ONLY IF I could use the Ivona Text to Speech app on my Android device to listen to those books. Since Kindle denies me that right then I am currently sour on purchasing any Kindle Items. Furthermore, since Amazon owns both Kindle and Audible.com then I am becoming increasingly concerned about Amazon's monopoly over my reading options.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 31, 2013 6:08:30 AM PST
Don't look now, but Amazon also owns Ivona...........

My older kindle just broke, and it appears they discontinued this version which has built in speakers (and a keyboard). Do any of the latest versions have speakers and therefore text to speech capability?

In reply to an earlier post on Jan 14, 2014 8:22:08 AM PST
The DX and the Fires offer TTS. The basic and the PaperWhite don't.

I have lost the professional narration feature for at least one of my books ("Babe : The Legend Comes to Life"); it works for at least one, also. Second, I can't find how to buy professional narration for other books I have bought (such as, "The Burglary")
