I'm getting my 35 year old daughter a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I'm trying to decide between the regular Fire and the HD Fire. I've already decided to get the 32 instead of the 16 - I'm seeing too many people say they're running out of space on the 16, but never having seen either model I'd like some input from people who may have seen/used both editions of the Fire to help me decide which I should buy for her.

Claudia - If you're getting her one with 32GB, then it has to be the HD since the 2nd Gen Fire doesn't have that option. It is 8GB only.

I ordered the Kindle Fire 8.9 HD 32g. I don't have it yet but love my 1st gen Fire so I'm hoping this one is even better.

Well, Claudia, that should make your decision easy. The regular Fire only comes in 8GB. If you want 32GB, you will have to buy the Fire HD.

That does make it easy - and obviously I should have had another cuppa coffee before asking the question or I could have figured this out for myself!

Thanks for your information (and your patience).

Thanks, Saintly. That's a sweet thing to say!

She's a really cool person to have for a daughter, and has had a rough year - I'm hoping this new "toy" will make her feel a little better. I can't cure my daughter's rheumatoid arthritis that she's been dealing with for more than a year, but I'm hoping I can at least help take her mind off it for a little while here and there . . .

My mother always said that everyone needs at least one toy for Christmas, no matter how old they are, and my mother was a pretty smart lady.

You're quite welcome, Claudia. And cool Moms seem to run in your family. Sage advice from yours. :-)

I have the original Kindle Fire and also the Kindle Fire HD. The regular Fire is a really nice device and if you get her that she'll be happy with it. But the Fire HD is really a lot nicer and if you get it you'll be glad you did and so will she.

It's a choice between very good and excellent.

Barry

Thanks, Saintly. :) I wish I'd realized before I did just how sage some of the advice I was given really was, but I did finally catch on!

Barry - she's definitely worth the excellent - guess I was just trying to figure out if there were any good reasons at this point to get anything other than the HD. Because of the arthritis, she'd actually rather have the smaller, lighter device than the large HD, which certainly makes sense.

The Kindle Fire HD is barely larger than the original Kindle. It is a little larger but that's because the bezel is wider and that might make it easier for her, not more difficult.

It's also a bit lighter, or at least mine feels lighter to me.

What you might want to do is go with her to a store that has both in stock and take a look.

You are right, Barryem. Not much difference, but the Fire HD is 13.9oz. & the orig. Fire is 14.1oz. according to the chart on the product description page.

You're a great mom! I got the first generation Fire last Chirstmas from my mom. I do have a suggestion that I haven't seen anyone else make. Get her a case for the device. With the RA she might drop it by accident and a good case will help to protect the device. I started off with a Marware case and then got an Oberon case as a birthday present. Both were good at protecting the device. I passed the Marware case on to a student of mine and I saw her occasionally saw her actually drop the fire from her locker to her books/backpack and the device survived. I love my Fire and use it daily.

Thanks, Mary Ellen. The case is on the Christmas list - no Kindle ever stays in this house 5 minutes without being in a case! Being a klutz runs in the family. ;)

You're welcome, Claudia. I didn't pick up on the fact that you and yours are not Kindle newbies. From reading posts on these forums, I think many new users don't understand that these devices are a bit...delicate. I hope your daughter loves her new 'toy'. I know I was delighted with mine last Christmas and my mom loved watching me play with it, even at my advance age of (at the time) 51!

Claudia,

Just a note about the case, specifically Mary Ellen's reference to a Marware case. I, too, have a Marware case (the CEO Hybrid model) for my first generation KF. So when I received the KFHD I immediately ordered the equivalent case for it. Unfortunately, I found that the design of the new Marware case forces one to charge the KFHD with the cover open. (The opening for the charger port is on the "spine" edge of the case.) The case, itself, is high quality but the design was a deal breaker for me. Replaced it with the Amazon case.

I saw the HD yesterday. It is fantastic! I have the iPad 3 with the retina display, and I was overly impressed with the HD display on the Fire. I have no problems recommending it. It was user friendly and had a very quick response time.
