Did anyone else get a new Kindle software download last night?

I do not the new Kindle setup that was downloaded on my kindle last night. I did not know it was coming, and all the books you have ordered are shown on the Kindle, not just the I read books, but everything from the cloud. It is fine I guess if you have just a few books, but after buying over 1700 books, it is difficult to wade through. I have then in collections, but it is still not efficient. Does anyone know a way to change what is actually shown on the Kindle? I looked in the Amazon instructions and did not see it, maybe I just missed it?

What type of Kindle do you have? If it's a Paperwhite look for Cloud | On Device in the top left of the home screen and select On Device.

Earlier last week my kindle PW restarted while I was reading. I thought possibly it was due to an update. My device info says I always leave my kindle on wifi since I borrow lots of overdrive library books and have some preorders set to auto download. I've never had a problem. My cloud says 300 books and 317 items. I have no collections created because my account is shared with 3 other readers in my family who use their own kindle PW. I noticed no real changes after the restart but then I didn't look for any changes either.

Well it is a paperwhite, and what is happening with the new download, books that are in the cloud are showing up, just in faint lettering. So when I go to my category all the books I have deleted after they are read, are still there. I understand by the faint ink it means they are in the cloud and not on the device, but just the fact they are "still there" adds pages and pages to a category. I hope this explains the problem , did you get an update yesterday? I looked online and the update is not listed at Amazon, but there is a new instruction booklet. The bookmarks are different too, they added a goodreads button on the task bar, and some kind of thing for if you have kids, which I ignored because it does not affect me. Some kind of new dictionary thing too, to keep track of words you look up if you are interested. The main thing I don't like is the listing of the books I have already deleted.

Do books you have deleted still show on your kindle?

My firmware version is, so it looks like our versions are different. I got a letter when it downloaded that this was a new version....mostly the same, just these few things that are different.

Maybe my device just did a random restart. I've had the goodreads app since December and the vacab builder along with kindle free time may have been on the device since purchase.

N. Gargano - yes, that's the new "Cloud Collections" feature on the Paperwhite. That's how it works now - all books in a Collection, whether on the device or not, will show when you open the Collection.

Linda - you have a PW2, N. Gargano has a PW1. Some of the software features you've had on the PW2 since purchase have just been added to the recent PW1 software update.

Thanks Mr. Boyle,I now consider myself a Kindle Kurmudgeon! I guess I will just have to get used to it.....

My Paperwhite updated a few weeks ago. Just at that time someone here on the Kindle forum told of the way to have those cloud titles not show up at all. I did that, but now can't remember how it was done. But try this: Long press the title of the book, then uncheck it from the list that comes up.

If this doesn't "hide" the book, write back and I'll think again.

I checked and I do have the most recent update for the PW2. Not sure when it occurred but I have no complaints with it. As I said the collections seem to be at the root of the problem. For readers with multiple readers/kindles on their account the collections should be left to the discretion of the device owner/user.

Hi Linda,

It is possible to have different Collections on Kindles sharing the same Amazon account.

No it tries to get me to add it to home, to collection or give me a book description. Thanks anyway, if you think of it, that would be great, but if it is too cumbersome I may just leave it the way it is. I have so many, which is great, means I read a lot, but if I have to do something book by book, may not be worth it. Thanks again though.

Arual - no, it isn't. The Cloud Collections feature causes all Collections to be shared. What you can do is hide some Collections so they won't appear on the Home screen except in Collections view, but they're still there.

Hm. I share an account with my friend and her daughter. We each have a bunch of books that show up on all three Kindles, and also several Collections with books on each individual Kindle that aren't on the others (that is, they're "there," but we can't see them). That's the way we like it - since the Home page isn't cluttered with books we (each of us individually) aren't interested in - but how did we accomplish that feat?

N. Gargano,

Not sure... still thinking... but are your sorts set to this across the top of your Home page? :

Cloud/On Device
My Items (set to All Items, not Collections)

If not, set it to that and do the long-press thing and see if you get that second screen with the boxes you can uncheck.

And Mr. Boyle, I think we're talking about the same thing after all (hiding versus gone).

Aural, if I go to books it seems to just show what is on the device, but the minute I go back to collections, the cloud books are back. I have so many books on my Kindle, it is a must I use collections. So thanks so much for trying to help, I will learn to live with the way it is I guess. I like to blame my lack of adaptability to my age!
