Just curious if this new Paper White backs up all of the books on the device or just those that have been purchased through amazon? I wasn't sure. :)

The Kindles don't back up anything. Ebooks purchased from Amazon are stored on the account that purchased them, any Kindles registered to that account can download them.

If you add ebooks to the Kindle from another source besides Amazon those are not added to your Amazon account. You need to keep a back up on your computer in case something happens to your Kindle. You can always use the Send To Kindle feature for your computer to upload your other books to be stored on Amazon.

Your Amazon purchased books are kept in your Amazon account. Any non-Kindle books you own must be backed up manually.

not necessarily, if you send them to your kindle via email or using Send to Kindle
