Highlights not syncing across devices

AMM says:
I read my kindle books on two pcs, my ipod, and my kindle. Although the whispersync brings all of them to the appropriate page reliably, my highlights only show up on the device I made them on. This means that when I open a book on my kindle, it only shows the highlights I made in that book on the kindle, but not the ones I made when reading it on my ipod or pc. This is obviously frustrating. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am having the same problem. Highlights on kindle are not syncing with kindle app on mac, and vice versa.

Erin O says:
Try deleting the book not syncing from the device that is not syncing and then adding it back from your archive. For example, if you have 50 highlights on your kindle connected to the network, but only 3 highlights on your pc, remove the book from your pc, then readd to the pc. That usually fixes things for me. Good luck!

My case is between PC and iPad2. No sync is really annoying.

I had the same problem. The solution I found was to go to the 'Home' screen of the Kindle. Click "Menu". Then select "Sync and Check for Items". This merges all recent highlights from other devices and apps.

Best wishes.

Amazon needs to fix this and make it easier!

H. Khanna's solution worked for me. Thanks for the post.

I've definitely seen this happen sometimes and what H.Khanna reported has worked for me. Select 'Sync and Check for Items'. To be clear, if you make highlights in two separate devices, don't worry, they both are definitely saved and will show up on both when the sync kicks in.

It's also worth checking to see if you turned off annotation backup...that's done on the Kindle itself. I think quite a few people did that to avoid participating in Popular Highlights when it was released:

Home-Menu-Settings, next page, next page, Annotations Backup

(That's on a Kindle 3, by the way)

All the suggestions above are good. It takes a bit of time for all devices to sync. Even when it says it is syncing, it often hasn't caught up. Be patient if your highlights don't show right away.

This fixed my sync problems across devices! Thank You!
Amazon really need to make this either an automatic sync or at least more intuitive.

If I delete the book from my Mac, won't all the highlights on the computer be deleted as well? It may be the best of a bad situation, but I don't want to lose my computer highlights either.

This fixed my Sync problem for my Kindle Fire and my Kindle Android app on a Samsun Galaxy tab.
However, it did not fix the lack of Highlighting / Notes Syncing on my Kindle App running on my MacBook Air laptop:
Kindle app v.: 1.8.3 (36180) Last updated 12/24//11
Mac OS: 10.6.8 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (late 2010)

I didn't find a menu option on the home screen on Kindle for Mac. I did check the archives (nothing archived) and then reselected the book; all my highlights showed up this time. It could have been that I didn't wait long enough for after the sync.

Thank you! Deleting the book off of my Mac Book and then re-installing it synced all of the highlights and notes that I have taken on my iPad and iPhone. Much appreciate the help!

Amazon, please make highlight syncing automatic!

Thanks to Khanna, that's what worked for me.

On your iPad and iPhone: make sure to go back to home, sync the device... and wait! Just syncing while reading doesn't work.

And if it still doesn't work: delete the book and download it again.

I tried forcing the sync with no luck. The test was done several times on the Kindle and on the PC but the notes and highlights I took on the Kindle (new keyboard model) do not show up on the PC version file for that book.

E. Olmon, your solution (removing book from then adding it back to device) worked for me. Thanks!

I'm having a similar issue only synching, turning off and on didn't work. I called Amazon and their advice was to connect to Wifi, delete all my highlights, re-highlight, synch again. Now that is not even working. Highlights are not even available through the Amazon website. I'm too scared to delete my book.
