In fact it's best for your battery life to keep your kindle offline unless you're actively downloading.

Yup, that is the whole point of the kindle. (Remember though that with the Kindle Fire, you can also read documents that are still stored in the amazon cloud too, and for those you, of course, need web access.)

Yes, just download it to device, not cloud and it will always be available.
You can go into settings and select the option that immediatly downloads any purchases to device or download it from cloud if you are on WiFi.....

As long as they are downloaded to the Kindle app on the ipad, yes.

As long as you see them in the 'Device' tab, you can read them offline.

I'm new---Have several books already read on my android tablet using kindle app. If I "remove" a book where does it go, and could I get it back if I wanted it later?

It doesn't really go anywhere. The is removed from your tablet but it's always available for redownloading from Amazon. Provided you purchased the book from Amazon in the first place.

You can resend it to your device from your http://amazon.com/myk page

How do you rent a Kindle book?

Mostly they are textbooks. When a book can be rented it will give the information in the description. It will list a price to rent and a price to buy.

I have downloaded kindle books to both my phone and my tablet - they are in the list as on device and show up, but if I try to read one offline it tells me I can't as there is no connection. Both are android, and this conflicts with what is said above - is there something else I need to do, as it seems from the above once downloaded it is available offline, but it's not happening

I have the same problem, too.
The books downloaded onto the device last year are still available offline, but those downloaded a few days ago are available only when the tablet is online, though the books are under the 'On Device' tab in the Kindle apps.
Has Kindle apps changed its operation?
Can anyone help?

When I got my paper white my old books showed up, but I had to tap on them while connected to wifi to download them, then you can read them anytime. A check mark shows up in the bottom corner when they are on the device. Hope this helps. I'm just learning.

OK, so my question is if I'm using my cloud reader on my pc and download books, where do they go? What is the device, so to speak? How do I read them offline? Is there like a Kindle for PC or somethng I need in order to read them? Thanks. Apologies if the answer is something really simple I've missed.
