Anyone else get an email stating that the HDX 8.9 Origami black leather case will not ship until 11/20?

Mine is 11/18. For a blue one. In fact I have "fought" two rounds of emails with customer service on this subject. I placed my HDX order at 4 minutes after everything launched September 24 at 9 PST. The accessory standalone pages weren't up yet. As they were posted in the following minutes, I realized that black wasn't my only color option for the case/cover so at 26 minutes past pre-order launch, I canceled just that item on my original order, and placed a second order for just a blue one as a separate order.

I have been told that it will come 11/19.

My latest email to amazon on the subject, replying to an initial response from them:
I absolutely agree that there is great demand for the Kindle HDX but my
suspicion is that my delayed delivery date for the accessory is due to a
system glitch rather than a true demand issue. E.g. That my order may not
have the "right" place in line for an order that was placed 26 minutes
after the case was even made available for preorder.

I ask that a supervisor looks at this for a simple test: are other orders
placed at the same time as this one being delivered in the same timeframe?

if the answer is no (as I suspect to be the case) I would like to ask if
we can fix this to have the "correct" place in line.

Their response:
I understand your concern regarding the shipment of the item - Amazon Kindle Fire
HDX 8.9" Standing Leather Origami Case (will only fit Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"), Blue.

I've reviewed the order information with the inventory and the shipping departments
in our organization and was informed that your item is in the correct place on the
order line and will be shipped at the earliest.

I was also informed that an automated systems receives your order details, monitors
the available of the items in our fulfillment centers and decides the estimated
delivery date. If the item is not in stock, it simultaneously triggers the
manufacturing department to ship the products, at the earliest. It also analyze the
shipping address, carriers that are available, while shipping the item to your
shipping address.

Rest assured, your order is in the correct place in the order line and will be
delivered before the estimated delivery date.

My take?

1) I am glad they didn't call themselves "Linda" or "Bob". I sell outsourcing services in part of my day job so I am certainly ok with international BPO outsourcing and understand the model -- I just hate when some companies start their customer service experience with a lie. Here, customer, trust me with your intimate account data, right after I started our conversation by lying to you on the most trivial thing we will talk about today.

2) This is REALLY poor demand planning if a customer can order a sole source product 24 minutes after launch and be delayed by more than a week in fulfillment. This isn't tickle me elmo, or some crazy one-minute-sellout ticket request. If you can fulfill the tablet the day of release, but somehow first-party accessories ordered in the same general window of time from the prime sales channel (e.g. not a QTY limited channel like retail is - stores only are allocated usually so many of initial production) are delayed by weeks, someone needs to have some uncomfortable conversations in the background about sourcing or demand projection.

3) If that's what it is, then that's what it is. I am not going to make melodramatic threats about cancelling my device or even my cover, because it will show when it shows. I just feel like my experience with the HDX has been far inferior to ordering devices and accessories last year, and the year before that. In general the amazon physical goods experience has really declined in my perception in the last 6 months or so versus the hundred of orders I have prior to that. Between instances like this, the cruddy fedex with USPS terminated shipping for some stuff, inconsistency in carrier choice, and a few orders that have just be outright wrong (I had a $240 SSD show up containing a $0.70 plastic wall plate instead), I hope Amazon is just going through some short term adjustment and this isn't a larger trend.

I am surprised the take on this is not more widespread. Is there someone out there who *is* getting this origami case on the 7th?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 23, 2013 7:05:30 PM PDT
I'm getting my case on the 7th. I ordered the red one.

monilee says:
I cancelled my order for the red one because it was arriving 11/7 but my kindle isn't arriving until 12/10. I was worried if there was any problem with the case and the wake/ sleep feature it would be past the 30 day return window. I'd love to hear how you like your cases when you finally get them. I keep wondering if I should get blue.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 23, 2013 8:41:22 PM PDT
I still don't have an estimated date for my blue one. The Order page said they need more time to give me an accurate estimate.

Yeah...the "joy" of ordering "new" stuff...I ordered the HDX and the origami case at the same time, quite soon ( minutes) after they were posted for sale. HDX immediately came back with Nov. 7 date...origami with "need more time." Two days ago, I was notified that my case (blue) was slated to arrive 20 Nov - go figure! Oh well...

Posted on Oct 24, 2013 8:43:24 AM PDT
Interesting, I wonder if they are having production issues / supplier delays on the blue 8.9 cases.

We have a confirmed red one on 11/7, but no one has chimed in with the earliest blue or black one. Oddly enough I am the earliest blue case posted so far.

L. Hill says:
Wayne - I would have to guess either an "issue" - or they waited to push production until after they saw the order numbers...and perhaps were overwhelmed by the numbers? Would make sense, especially if they were burned on the Fire HD covers, which I understand they were...those covers didn't sell as well as they hoped, at least as I understand and have read. Still...with the lead-time they had on HDX orders - you would think the arrival dates would be closer, even if they weren't the same...two weeks seems like a pretty large disconnect...

I ordered the black leather on 9/26, to be delivered on 11/20 now.

Ed G says:
My order for the polyurethane version (I won't buy leather) still says Nov 7.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 24, 2013 2:25:12 PM PDT
monilee says:
I wish they were giving the same color choices on the polyurethane covers for the 8.9 as they are for the 7". Case color is how we tell which kindle belongs to who.

Ed G says:
Yeah, color would be nice. Still, not so wonderful that I'm willing to sacrifice an animal's life for it. No fur, no leather.

D. Hill says:
Black leather arrival date has improved to 11/12. I wonder if they are having production or quality problems.

Posted on Oct 28, 2013 12:54:06 PM PDT
Unfortunately blue cover is still 11/19. Black is now 11/12, earliest red appears to be 11/7.

Anyone have an earlier date than these on blue or black?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 28, 2013 2:09:41 PM PDT
I still don't have any date for the blue cover, and I preordered fairly early.

Posted on Oct 28, 2013 2:29:43 PM PDT
monilee says:
After reading about delays I reordered the red on 10/25. The estimated delivery is now 11/20. I'm happy with that date as I will have the cover when my hdx arrives, but it will still be within the 30 day window in case of any problems.

Posted on Oct 28, 2013 3:31:56 PM PDT
Cyndie says:
Those dates could be bumping up from cancelled orders. I originally ordered the red one with a date of 11/20 but became concerned over reports of it putting the HDX to sleep with the cover folded back. So, I cancelled mine and for only $10 more than what I was going to spend on the origami case, I got two cases, a blue tooth keyboard and a stylus.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 28, 2013 6:29:16 PM PDT
Cyndi, a fair point, but I have trouble trusting the recent spate of cheap cases. Buying the most expensive is not a true indicator of quality, but all the same, I am concerned when I see cases offered for $0 and $5 shipping or some such.

For electronics, I see the case as an intermediate protection against the risk of dropping - and the more certain risk of being subject to my travel bag. Will a "free" case provide any protective value? Quality protective materials typically have a cost. If a company is not seeking to recoup even moderate costs, ostensibly, in their business model, its hard to believe I am mitigating that risk.

Do I need a $60 case? Maybe not. But I am quite nervous about the proposition of the replacements that can be had for multiple items in the same funds.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 29, 2013 5:10:50 AM PDT
Cyndie says:
Oh I agree. That's one of the things about the origami case that was concerning me that it was held in with magnets and I prefer the way my Paperwhite snaps into its case. No way will that thing pop out of there if I drop it. So, I went with the Poetic thin case which looks similar to my Paperwhite Amazon case. It was $15 with $5 shipping, although I did see people saying they got theirs for $1 with $5 shipping earlier.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 29, 2013 10:15:43 AM PDT
I just got an email this morning informing me of the delay on the blue cover and with no estimated delivery date. I ordered within an hour or so of the HDX and covers being available for pre-order, so I can't imagine I'm that far down in the queue that they ran out. I suspect that there is some quality/spec issue with the covers, so it makes sense to delay shipment until they get them right (rather than having to deal with returns later). Disappointing, but not a big deal in the overall scheme of things. Still, my dilemma now is that I'll have the HDX next week (I hope!) but no cover, which I view as a necessity to protect the device. So do I cancel the origami case and order something else, or order a cheap one and then discard it when the origami case finally arrives? Anyone have a good recommendation for an alternative? I've been very happy with my Amazon-made Paperwhite and Kindle Keyboard covers; got a cheap Marware case for my 1st gen. Fire and it's been adequate, though at this point after two years of daily use it's getting pretty ratty.

Cyndie says:
I got this one after cancelling my red origami case: Poetic Slimline Case for New Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (2013) 8.9inch Tablet Navy Blue (3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic)

And I got this one, too as a backup cover: i-Blason Slim-fit Cover Case for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 Inch Tablet (Not Compatible with Kindle Fire HD 8.9 2012 Release)--Lifetime Warranty (Purple)

The poetic cases were the ones that were going for free and a $5 shipping fee. I have serious trouble trusting them, particularly as objective input on them is not very prevalent. (You will have to forgive me if I take Amazon reviews with a grain of salt given how much money is being made for writing biased reviews right now, with Amazon a prime target of these services. A great example being the iBlaison case where I traced many of the 5 star review's reviewers and many had all of the hallmarks of being paid reviewers with large strings of perfect reviews and little to no variation in the review depth.)

I was able to find one poetic review that is pretty recent:

Cyndie, if you would be so kind, would you mind sharing your thoughts on the poetic case when you get it?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 29, 2013 11:19:56 AM PDT
Cyndie says:
I certainly will!! I don't usually write reviews (way too paranoid about fan gurls and boyz beating me up) but will come back to here to let you all know how I like it. However, it's not supposed to ship until November 15 so my poor HDX will be naked for two weeks.

I saw post on another discussion that there has been an issue with the case putting the kindle to sleep when the case is completely folded back. One poster said that when they contacted mayday they were told that they were working on a fix and that they would send an email so a replacement could be sent when the issue has been resolved. That could be the reason for the postponed delivery dates.
