I received a Kindle Fire as a gift from my nephew who purchased it in the US. I Live in Singapore. I have registered my Kindle Fire using my Amazon account but so far I am not able to download any content. Any tips?

You'll only be able to download ebooks from Amazon. You won't be able to get movies or apps from Amazon. See the details on the product page for the Fire.

Sorry, Claire, Amazon's product page for all kindles says:
"Unfortunately, we are currently unable to ship Kindles or offer Kindle content in Singapore."

Moreover, even if that were not the case, app, movies and music (I think) are available only in the USA - we internationals can only use Fire as an e-book reader and web browser, and install apps and download multimedia content from sources other than Amazon.

Thanks Dragi - wee disappointed after the euphoria of receiving it as a gift:) Is there any way around this; for example if I open a new Amazon account with a UK credit card/bank account & Uk billing address am I able to download content when I am visiting the UK to my Kindle Fire? I don't usually visit the USA and don't have a bank account there!

@Claire,

There is no way around getting the apps or movies outside the US or using a credit card that is not US based. Amazon is firm about this. The Fire is made basicly for US customers.

Claire,

I think you can use VPN. Do a google on "How to use Kindle Fire in Singapore". I'm sure you can find lots of information.

There's even a Kindle Fire in Singapore group on Facebook.

That might be worth a try, but I am not sure will it work. Anyway, since opening an account costs you nothing, try it. Let us know how it works.

Edit: This will work only for books, if it does at all. VPN certainly is an option, as I. Ng suggests - it makes you appear being somewhere else. However, it will sill work for books only.

I just remembered this thread about Fire in the UK:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-forum/kindle/ref=cm_cd_search_res_ti?ie=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdMsgNo=11&cdPage=1&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx1NW3J8LFJJ8NJ&cdMsgID=Mx3N4J77BR9BQBG#Mx3N4J77BR9BQBG

UK-based account, VPN and information from this thread could assemble a workable, it a bit cumbersome solution.

Thank You Ng for the VPN tip ! Thanks Dragi; Just read all the posts on the link you shared - very illuminating. Little daunted now by how to figure this out but will report back if I crack it. I really only want to download books, not really bothered about other content and there are some posts that suggest that might make things easier:)
