i live in idaho...all of a sudden my kindle books are being taxed...is this new for 2014?

Idaho isn't on the list of the three states in which Amazon began collecting sales tax as of 1/1/14.

It could also be due to the publisher. Some of my Kindle books were charged sales tax in Texas before Amazon began blanket collection of sales tax.

I'm in Idaho too, and have been taxed on some Kindle book purchases for a while now. Some publishers collect tax in all states.

Cluny, I have trouble believing that any major publisher/internet company would go to the bother of collecting sales tax if they were not required to do so by law. They all have highly paid lawyers on retainers to make sure they are not breaking the law.

Which book(s) were you charged sales tax on? I suspect Amazon wasn't the seller, most likely it was a third party that has a physical presence in Idaho.

Amazon as the seller:

Third party seller (many publishers):

Ok, Simon & Schuster is the seller and apparently they collect tax in all states other than AK, DE, MT, NH, and OR*

*Amazon has changed their help page or I just can't find the correct one. They used to list all the digital sellers and broke things out by state. I just cut and pasted from a previous posting.

Cluny,

You are sooooo wrong. For over a year I have been charged sales tax on books that are sold by the publisher and I was not the only one. As of November 1, 2013 all the purchases made in WI are now taxed.

None of of the publishers have a physical presence in WI and we still got charged. The governor we have now and the one before him have been pushing to have internet sales be taxed. It started with iTunes about 3 years ago and now it is with Amazon. I know Apple does not have a physical presence in WI.

You need to go back to school to learn what you think you know!

Clunky,

I know you feel you have knowledge beyond your years but it does not take a rogue scholar to figure out a sales invoice.

First of all I am familiar with how to look things up on the internet and find out if there are any publishing companies in my state.

Second, I am vigilant at checking invoices. I worked in retail and know how many mistakes are made. I also pay attention on which column the book is when I purchase it. Again this is not a action that is hard to miss. Well for most people.

Third, all the times I have purchased items sold from Amazon have been tax free up until November of 2013.

So to sum things up; you do not have to be a lawyer or a law student to tell when you are charged tax and when you are not. Well, I should say for most people. By the way, I figured out that the publishers were charging tax about 2 years ago. That shows how much you have been paying attention. :D
