I just bought a Kindle Fire and I wanted to know is there a function to turn it off or just by the off button?

The off button is the best way to turn it off. In fact, it's the only way.

Retired EE says:
If you hold the power button down for 30 seconds the KF will turn completely off. In that mode it will use very little power and can be left in that mode for a week or more. It takes longer to turn on from that mode and undergoes a system reset without deleting anything from the KF. There are times that performing a system reset can resolve problems. A short press of the power button will put the KF into a sleep mode which uses much less power that while on but returns to the place you were at instantly. That is the normal turn off mode.
