A friend who is at sea for six months, and out of range for wireless, is having battery problems with his Kindle (purchased 18 months ago). The battery is not lasting any more than a couple of days. Anyone got any suggestions?

Artist says:
Which Kindle? If it's a KK, does he have it in a cover that clips into the side of the Kindle? He should remove that cover if he's using it and see if that helps.

He may also have books stuck indexing. To check, have him type xyxyxy (on the home page -- a box will pop up). At first it will display that there are 0 matches (since that word isn't in any book), but if any books are stuck indexing, they will begin to list. He should delete those books and download them again, giving each book time to index before download the next one.

He could also try a reboot. Hold the power button for 30 seconds (time it), release the button, and wait for the home page to reappear.

Also he should check whether his wifi (and 3G if he has it) is switched on or off. The kindle uses a lot more battery if the wifi is on but the device is out of range of a signal - much more even than when the wifi is on and *in* range - because it keeps on checking to see if it's in range.
