My favorite time of year, when the daffodils bloom. Mine haven't yet, though their green shoots are several inches above ground. The crocuses in my lawn have bloomed and passersby regularly stop to gawk. The weeping cherry in the back yard is bursting with buds that will be blooms. Even my brand new baby maple tree has buds that promise I will get some color in the front yard come autumn (my other favorite time of year.) I love the cool nights and warmish days we're getting.
All that is to say, welcome each and every one of you that come into this room. We encourage friendly (even goofy) banter and insist on kindness. We have several years of history now and have managed to keep the primary theme a cheerful and supportive one. We love having new people drop in and see if they want to stay for a while. There's a fully stocked snack corner over there --->. There are comfy chairs all about and a big stone fireplace for toasting marshmallows or warming your hands when you come in from work. As might be expected in a group of readers, we have a higher percentage of introverts than in the outside world, so you'll see people in the quiet corners as well as people in the free-for-all section. Making sense is not required, but being respectful is.
Now on to the logistics:
What is RAOK? It stands for Random Acts of Kindness, and that's what we're all about - we try to be a oasis in a world where being nice isn't considered 'nice' any longer. An act of kindness doesn't have to involve money. We do gift books to brighten someone's day, but gifting is not required at all. We're here to make our friends laugh, to lend a helping hand if we can, and a sympathetic ear if we can't. If that appeals to you more than the daily grump and snark of real life, stop in, introduce yourself, and visit for a bit.
SAFETY TIPS and INFORMATION:
It's a good idea if you have an open wish list. To check your wish list, click on the link at the top right of any Amazon page. Then click on (one of) your wish lists. From the menu, select "list settings", then "privacy settings". Make sure at least one is set to 'public' so others can see your wish list. It's always a good idea to have a few 99-cent or $1.99 books on there.
You should also make sure that your wish list does not show your real/full name. To check, follow the above instructions to get to your wish list. Click the "list settings" drop down menu. This time, select "Edit Settings" and this will bring you to a screen that shows your privacy settings. The name you see on the Recipient's Name line is the name that is shown to people you GIFT books to. Simply change it to the name you're comfortable with and save. This will prevent your full name from being displayed on your gifts or on your WL.
To change your Account Name, you have to go to Your Account in the upper right corner then Change Account Settings and edit your name. This won't affect anything that you can see except what it shows at the top of the page when it says "Hi Cyndie" instead of "Hi Cyndie MyLastName". And all people will see on their Digital Orders that send me any gifts is Cyndie, not Cyndie MyLastName." (this last one is important, since it doesn't change anything in YOUR view, lots of people end up having their real names showing on their WL instead of their screen names. Also, you need to make that change separately for EACH public wish list.) It sounds complicated, but it really isn't, and it's well worth a few minutes' work.
Let the chattering begin!
