After the latest update I was getting highlights on several pages that I had not placed.

They are Popular Highlights that are automatically added by Kindle and can be turned off.

To do so start at your home page and press menu...go to settings...then down to popular highlights and click on it to turn them off.

S., thanks for posting that...that is how you turn off the display in your books.

If you want to stop participating in the program (having your highlights contribute to the popular highlights), you disable Annotations Backup in the same place;

Home-Menu-Settings

Disabling Annotations Backup has other consequences.

If you do this, Amazon will no longer backup your notes, highlights, bookmarks or last place read. These will still show in your book while it is on the Kindle, but if you remove the book, and then decide to download later they will be gone.

You will also not be able to use the website:

http://kindle.amazon.com/

to display and extract those notes and highlights for printing or emails.

I believe it will also affect your ability to sync the last place read with other devices, but am uncertain as I don't have a second device.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these on Mac. I find it very annoying & do not understand why they added this feature.

Choose Kindle, select Preferences, select Annotations, unclick Enable Popular Highlights.

I agree that I can't imagine why they made such an in-your-face "feature" the default.

You are right Fool For Books, they won't be able to sync to last page read on other devices.

I bought a Kindle wireless with 3G about two months ago with ver 3.1 software. It all seems to work fine except none of my notes or highlights show up when I call up the View Notes and Marks menu. All that show up are the bookmarks. In the view Popular Highlights menu only highlights from other readers show up.

Any idea how I can read my own notes and highlights? Everything seems to be enabled except the Sharing Notes option on social networks.... I don't want to share my comments with the rest of the world.

Thanks,
Bill

Disabling Annotations Backup will also result in Amazon not backing up your Collections, if you have created any.

I would also like to turn off the Popular Highlights, but that is not an option on my Settings screen. My only options are Registration, Device Name, and Wi-Fi Settings.

You should have 3 pages of Settings, try pushing the "Next Page" button.

I should have searched for this sooner, the amount of popular highlights in the fifth Song of Ice and Fire book was fairly annoying. Oh well, the future will feature less annoying dotted lines!

Thank you - thank you - thank you! This has been driving me crazy and is very distracting when I am reading. It worked like a charm!

How about kindle fire. Settings do not have this feature.

On the Kindle iPad app, I cannot get the Popular Highlights to turn off - doesn't matter what setting I have for It: "on", "off" - in both modes those dotted lines are ruining my read - HELP!

On my iPhone kindle app I found it under settings then scroll down to the bottom click on Other. You can them turn off.

Do what the OP says up until you get to the "Settings" menu. On the Settings menu, your last option (of four) should be "Reading Options." Open that up and you should see Popular Highlights.

I wanted to add that you do this but setting popular highlights to on. So if you want them off, it needs to be set to on. Kinda confusing, Amazon! ;-)
