Whilst preparing this message I was switching between my PC (where I typed this message) and my Surface device. At one point I left a book open on the Surface for an extended period. When I returned my attention to the surface and went back to Library, that book no longer had the cloud icon on its cover. It now shows up under 'Device'. FYI, I had already read 80% of this title.

I repeated this process for a second book and left it opened for around 5 minutes. That book, also, was then displayed under Device.

With a 3rd book, I opened it and was reading for only 60 seconds. When I returned to the Library, that book still had the Cloud icon on its cover.

My guess is that the app jumps to the appropriate starting place in the book and allows me to begin reading whilst downloading the rest of the title in the background - just to make things look really fast. With absolutely no visual indicators that the download is taking place in the background, my only choices are to allow an excessive amount of time for the download to complete with the book opened, or to shorten that time and to potentially find that the Cloud icon still exists when I return to the Library. I would then have to start the whole process again.

On my iOS devices and Windows PC, a title is not available to read until it has been fully downloaded to my device. That is a much more reliable indicator to the user that the book will be available for reading off-line rather than having to play the cat and mouse game I've just played.

Amazon, please consider changing how you handle downloads for the Windows 8 Kindle Reader app!

Microsoft Surface Pro 128GB + 64GB SD Card. Windows 8 shows I have 80GB+ of free storage.

I have installed the Kindle app on my device. I have logged into my Kindle account.

All 50+ of my Amazon.com-purchased books are shown in the app when selecting 'Cloud'.

I can successfully open a book from the Cloud page. The reader jumps to the page I last read using the Kindle Reader app on my iPhone, iPad or Windows desktop PC.

What I CANNOT get to happen is to download the book to my device's memory so I can read it whilst off-line. After opening a book if I return to Library and select 'Device', there are no books shown and the book cover continues to show the cloud icon at the bottom right corder.

Kindle help for Windows 8 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200939480) speaks in very general terms:

"Once downloaded, the book will appear under your Downloaded (or Device) tab and is available for reading offline"

On an iOS device or with the Windows (non-Windows 8) desktop program, the first time I open a book it is automatically download to the device.

I have tried touch and holding the book cover but there are no obvious differences (eg. no 'Download this book' types of prompts).

If I am without Wi-Fi, this problem renders the device useless for reading. Reading is one of my most popular activities on all of my portable devices.

How do I download books from my Cloud library onto my local device for off-line reading?

I have an Android tablet and an iPad Mini -
So, just for learning what you are seeing... vs what we see on our iPad -

On my iPad Mini - bringing up the Kindle app - at the bottom, it has [Cloud] [Device]
Click Cloud -
click at top - All Items -
each book shows either;
- upper right corner bookmark icon flap with % read
- lower right corner icon down-arrow for downloading
- or nothing, if the book has been downloaded, but not opened/read as yet.

Click Device -
same general book image with bookmark flap or nothing -
no download arrow of course

As a followup - and what confused me with the title -
is this problem with;
A - the Surface Pro, Windows 8, and Kindle app/program ?
B - the Surface RT, Windows 8, and Kindle app/program (if possible) ?
B - the PC, Windows 8, and the Kindle app/program ?

So - please be clear as to which platform combo is being used,
since the "Windows 8" title could imply 3 different hardware platforms & assoc software apps.

I chose what I thought would be as concise a title for my issue as was possible. It is already 50 characters in length. In the body of my message I clearly state my environment is "Microsoft Surface Pro 128GB + 64GB SD Card. Windows 8 shows I have 80GB+ of free storage".

Sorry if the title along with the environment information causes you confusion... "B" from your list.

The trick is: Open the book from the Cloud section. With the book open, swipe up from the bottom of the Surface and there you will see a "Downloading x%' indicator. When it hits 100% your book will now be available under Device for off-line reading.

In my opinion that downloading indication needs to be visible without requiring the swipe-up on the Surface. No where in Amazon's Kindle help pages is this swipe-up menu mentioned. I just happened to stumble across it.

In recent months I have found Amazon's Kindle servers to be VERY slow when compared to ~2 years ago when I began reading books with the Kindle app on my iPhone. When I start the app, I frequently have to wait for up to 60 seconds before I can open a Device book and the last page sync to work. If I open the book too quickly I will not be given the option of jumping to the furthest page (where I left off on another device). I have to shutdown the Kindle reader app, start it again and wait for the data activity indicator on my phone to stop moving, then I can reliably open and jump to.

For a company that is investing billions of dollars in building global data centers, it seems they are ignoring the performance problems of their own services to existing customers.

I have a Surface RT, and until the last Kindle update, my books downloaded and read ok. Now my books are in the cloud, but when I download, it just says "pending" forever, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection. I have dis-installed and re-installed a number of times.

I had the same kind of error but it would sit and then after scrolling back and forth in the cloud see one that was downloading, It takes FOREVER.

I have been having a problem. Just like you said Stu, From CLOUD on my windows 8 app on my laptop I see a set of books with a little cloud in the corner, I do understand that this means it is avail only online. So i right click it, at the bottom of the screen you see DOWNLOAD BOOK, click that , will see PENDING on the book in the cloud, then see the progress bar of the download. (you can repeat this on several books and they will all say pending except the currently downloading one) Here is the issue, unless I want to sit there using the Kindle for Windows 8 APP the download seems to stop( no it really does stop, I checked by having a book downloading, noting where the progress bar was, opening a internet browser for 15 minutes, returning to kindle for windows 8 and the progress bar had not moved, it started moving again with no jump after about 30 seconds) if I switch to anything else on the computer, even desktop, google chrome (browsing internet) or whatever else I would like to do. I need a way that the downloads will continue while Kindle app is in the background, how to download my whole cloud (without having to click all 105 books individually and telling each to download)

OK: I have a similar problem, with a twist: I've downloaded a title that I now want to remove permanently from My Books, but the is no available option. I'm using a Surface, Win 8 RT, Kindle for Win 8 2.0... any ideas...?

My problem is slightly different. I tried to purchase organic chemistry 4th edition by Janet Smith. After I made the purchase I tried to open it on my windows 8 laptop using the windows 8 kindle app. It told me it would not work on the windows 8 app. Does anyone know if there is a workaround. Kindle refunded me but I would rather have the book.

when you look at the book listing, there is usually a pull down menu that lists the devices it "should" work on... it would be interesting to see what is listed ?
or - point us to the Amazon listing URL itself...

Sometimes, there are certain internal "features" that different firmware, or implementations of the software app, are "required" for the reading of certain types of materials...

I'm using a surface pro. I have the kindle app. Bought a book but it doesn't show up in my library. I've clicked on 'purchase now' 3 times. I hope I haven't paid three times. It says that the download is taking a long time and for me to track its progress in the library, but when I go to my library it isn't there under cloud or devices.

A variant of the problem: I have bought a book some weeks ago and put in my iPad. In the meantime I ve bought a windows 8 tablet / PC (toshiba u920 ...) and despite having downloaded and installed the kindle app for win8 for some titles I get a message saying "this title is not available for windows 8". Anyone has been confronted with a similar situation? Is this temporary or Amazon is not supporting windows 8?

Carlos, not all books are compatible with all devices and reading apps.

If you go to the product page for that book it will list the compatible devices/reading apps.

I have tried these suggestions and I still cannot use my surface with windows 8 to open a book with my kindle app either on my tablet or on my cloud.

I've tried to download a book from the cloud, to read, on my Nokia 2520 with Kindle app installed.

I cannot open the book in the cloud from the app, I would have to go to Amazon.com and open it there I suppose. But I don't want to.

I want my tablet to download the book, so I can read it on my device, where the book belongs.

Download is still pending...

I have had my kindle for windows 8 for several months, working fine. Now all of a sudden it says I have no books..

I received my Microsoft Surface for Christmas and everything was working fine. Today, I went to read my book via the Kindle app on my commute, as I normally do, and I'm being told the app is not set-up to work offline. Why is this becoming an issue now???

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 7, 2014 9:23:54 PM PST
Did you ever get this resolved? I'm dealing with the same issue. New device. Would like to download all my books at once.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 12, 2014 8:58:57 AM PST
Yes...please get to it! (How annoying is this????????????????

For what it's worth, you're not alone. Asus VivoTAB ME400C with Win 8.1, and the whole download thing is ridiculously complex. I've had books stall for literally an hour that I've downloaded to my Win7 laptop - same network connection - in less than 3 minutes. It's really a very consumer-unfriendly way of doing things.

I bought this tablet to take with me to places without WiFi, right now it's just a very expensive desk-side clock.

Posted on Feb 25, 2014 7:24:28 AM PST
I agree! I don't understand why I can download to all of my devices except the one device on which I have the most storage capacity - my PC! Please fix this app so we have the ability to download at our discretion.
