My computer is running Windows 7, my Kindle Fire HD does not register. I have tried everything that I can find on this forum and it doesn't work. Any additional suggestions?

Sharon, if you're still having troubles, try looking in Windows 7 device manager. I was having the same problem recently and had to uninstall the Kindle in the Device Manager and then re-attach the Kindle to get it to work. Here's what I did:

1. Have your PC on and your Kindle attached via the USB cable

2. Go to the Start menu and select/open the Control Panel

3. In the control panel, select System

4. When the System panel opens, select Device Manager option on the left side of the panel

5. When the Device Manager opens, look for the listing "Portable Devices". This is where your Kindle should be listed.

6. If the triangle to the left of "Portable Devices" is pointing right, click the triangle to open the listings in "Portable Devices"

7. If you see "Kindle" with an exclamation point inside a yellow triangle, then your Kindle driver isn't working properly. If you see "Kindle" just by itself, then the driver is working correctly and you're having another issue. It might be your Fire itself. (If you don't see anything, then I'm guessing Windows didn't even install a driver for your Kindle and you'll have to try and find one to install).

8. Assuming you see that warning symbol next to "Kindle", right mouse button click on "Kindle" and a menu will open up. You should see an option "Uninstall". Select this option and confirm you want to uninstall the driver by clicking OK.

9. After the driver is uninstalled, disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable from/to your Kindle Fire. Windows should reinstall the driver and it should be working. At least I hope it will, it worked for me.

Hope this helps you out.

Try a new cable, that is all it took for me.

If you have any apps (applications) in your Carousel, try removing them.
You can always put them in your Favorites section instead.
In my case, I had a really great battery-monitoring app in my Carousel,
and for some unknown reason it was preventing Windows from accessing my
Kindle files. It still recognized the Kindle in the "Devices and Printers"
section of the Windows Control Panel, but not anywhere else.

After I removed the app (but left it in my Favorites section), Windows was
able to access all the folders and files on my Kindle Fire, and I was able
to move many downloads to folders where I could access them on the
Kindle, such as "Docs" and "Books".

I don't know why it worked, but it did.

Bradley - thank you! This post helped me as well. I found my system was generating an MTP error, and I let Windows update the driver, and that was what got mine to work. Thank you again!!

Did you also just uninstall and restart. Because I have tried that several times and when I ask windows to find an updated driver for me it says it can't find one.

This probably works great for those that have a "Portable Devices" list. You need to understand that people have different versions of Win7 that don't have that as an option in the Device Manager.

my recently purchased Kindle Fire HD 7 will not run the 5 Lotto apps I bought from the amazon appstore. I just emailed the app publisher to see if he could help.
doesn't anyone at Amazon or the publisher test these apps to see if hey will work on Kindles?

Using Windows 7 64bit. None of the suggested solutions fixed this problem. I was able to get it to register on my laptop using Windows 7 32 bit (the driver error still popped up but you could access the device through my computer/windows exploerer), so possibly that may be another issue added to the problem? I'm seriously disappointed with the depth of this issue. The Kindle Fire HD is not new and neither is Windows 7. To have to spend this much time trying to trouble shoot it to simply be able to transfer a file is ridiculous. I realize there are other options available to some like my self. I have the options to send it through wi-fi and multiple computers, but not everybody does. Even more since this is a budget tablet. Amazon needs to get their act together on this and A: fix the damn issue B: provide much clearing and helpful support options. The page that you are eventually lead to both from the device and the website (https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201022260) doesn't even list Windows 7 and most of the users I've read about trying to resolve this problem are using exactly that OS. It's even more frustrating to figure out why they can't make this work when the first Kindle Fire that I gave to my mother (which led to me picking up the new one) never had the slightest problem connecting with this exact same machine.

Yep... Correct... try the proper Amazon 'white' cable. Its more sheilded and works fine.

Just want to say that my driver did not have the yellow triangle, but I did get a fix from this by right-clicking and choosing to 'Update driver software'. As soon as I did that, my Kindle appeared as a device on my PC and Calibre (a great program for converting and uploading books from non-Amazon sources to your Kindle) gave me the 'Send to device' option again. In other words, Updating the driver has made my Kindle Fire HD recognised by my Windows 7 PC.
Thanks Bradley, appreciate you taking me (and doubtless dozens of others worldwide!) to the right place :-).

Thank you - I've had the exactly same problem but my Kindle was not visible even in "Devices and Printers" - when I've removed the app everything is back to normal.

What if under the Device Manager options, there is no menu for "Portable Devices"? Because there isn't one listed on mine.

had the exact same problem and fixed it this way...

Control Panel>
Device Manager>
Expand Portable Devices>
Right click "Kindle">
Update Driver Software>
Select Browse my computer for driver software>
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer">
Under Manufacturer select "(Standard MTP Device)">
under Model select "MTP USB Device">
Click Next and press ok after the warning.

If you had the same problem as I did this fixed it for me.

fyi MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol it is used for things like generic USB thumb drives or other similar devices.

Will this work for windows 8 too?

I am having trouble as well with my Kindle Fire HD 7 not being recognized by the Windows 7 x64 box.

Tried different computers, different cables, etc.

I do not understand why something so simple is so hard. Need to get a video off the device and onto my PC.
