Problems with 3G connection on Kindle keyboard?

My Kindle, which has always worked on 3G without any problem, has stopped connecting to 3G. I am currently stuck with Wi-Fi, which is a pain as our Wi-Fi doesn't extend throughout our house. So far Amazon hasn't been able to identify and correct the problem, though I have dealt with two very helpful Live Chat agents. I am to try again tomorrow with the technical team. Anyone had this problem? The 3G has always been something I've loved about my Kindle, as I haven't had to think about availability of Wi-Fi.

If you are within range of a wi-fi signal, it will try to connect to wi-fi. Either move out of range or forget that connection and see if it works again.

I assume they had you try a restart and a reboot?

I had this happen twice with two different Kindles. Both times I had Kindle Customer Service call me and they had the tech team reestablish the radio signal. Took half an hour or less both times. Both have been working fine ever since.

I once had "zero bars" for several minutes on my K2. I went to Settings page, typed 311 to get network choice screen, switched to another network and back, and everything was OK.

This happened once for me when I had my K2. I did a hard restart (reboot) by holding the power switch for 30 seconds and then releasing it. Once you do that, just step back and wait a few minutes for the Kindle to get going. Don't panic when it looks like all your books are gone. They aren't. It will just take a little bit of time for your home page to repopulate. I was able to reconnect to 3G without any issues.

Make sure you have a good charge on your Kindle before doing this. Also, do not have your charger plugged in while you try this. If it doesn't work, I would suggest calling Customer Service.

They were not really sure, just said the radio signal was not connecting. They had to reestablish it from their end. The second time around went quicker because I had already done all the checks they had had me do the first time before I called - reboot, check for networks with 311 as you mention below.

The day after my post, I had a successful third session with Amazon & my 3G is now restored. I was asked to restart again, and thne instructed to do a couple of things at my end, which resulted in the Kindle starting to reconnect to the 3G when I was out of range of Wi-Fi. I have turned off the Wi-Fi connection and am back to just 3G, which is what I had always had before this recent problem, and which suits me just fine! Still don't know what triggered the problem in the first place.

what is that "couple of things" they instructed you to do? I'm having the same problem with 3G and I would like to try your solution before trying the Customer Service.

I'm glad Breezy and Well Then have 3G connection again. I had a chat session with Amazon rep two days ago for 2.5 hours and couldn't re-establish 3G connection. Now I'm waiting to hear from the tech department.

I'm having a similar issue with connecting to 3g. I ended up doing a factory reset on my own which allowed me to connect to 3g, but as soon as I connected to wifi again it would not allow me to connect to 3g. I was on the phone with Amazon CS today and they had me go to the 311 page where my Kindle spent more than 20 minutes searching for a signal to no avail. The CS representative then gave me the option of doing a factory reset again and just not connecting to wifi again or to purchase a replacement kindle for $85. She said that she would pass along the information to the tech support and that they may get back with an answer, or may not. She also called me back and asked me to go to a 611 page, but my Kindle would not load that page. She seemed very surprised that the kindle would not load that page, but did not have any further suggestions for me.

I don't recall now exactly what the third agent directed me to do that resolved the 3G connection problem. But after I did it, I disabled the wifi option and have never turned it back on. Which suits me fine. (There are a couple of things that I have to figure a way of doing if I need to...to do with delivery of personal documents, but I would rather figure that out, than have the bizarre experience I was having with the wifi connection. I remember driving and looking at the kindle when I was stationary in traffic, and instead of connecting to 3G, it was trying to connect to the wifi at every random store nearby...the pet store, the Texaco station, the hardware store, etc.!!! After the final re-set, I haven't tried wifi again, and am happy with the 3G, which connects wherever I am...in airports, on mountaintops, at the shopping centre....I was never offered the option of paying for a replacement Kindle. Hope you are able to figure it out.

My Kindle came up with this message: 611 Page WAN unavailable at this time
The Technical Specialist told me my 3G would never work on my Kindle, he said it was because there is a shelf-life to the 3G and they just sometimes stop working, but good news for me "Wi-Fi" would still work. Like you I purchased the 3G version because I don't always have access to Wi-Fi. Good luck, but if you come up with this message you are out of luck with 3G on your Kindle.

Unfortunately, after performing another factory reset as advised neither the 3G nor the wifi works now. It will connect to wifi, but will no longer connect to the kindle store. Now I must transfer everything manually through the computer.

Hi Lauren,
I am in exactly the same situation now. After factory reset I cannot connect kindle store nor register. 3G is not working, Wifi is working, but kindle store and registration is unavailable... It seems to be like kindle device is blackouted from Amazon Whispernet..
Do you have any progress in your case ?

No progress. Only way I can buy books is to load them through the computer.

I actually had exactly the same problem (in Germany)! There seems to be no solution.

I had the same problem and I think, it has to to with an automated update from kindle! I got an update, and since then there was no 3G-functionality. after factory-resetting there was even no WLAN-functionality. seems like amazon is responsible for this troubles.

Thank you all for all your info a friend forwarded this site to me. I have had exactly the same problems as the above, I also purchased the 3G version as we do a lot of travelling. Now also have to download via my computer. After numerous e-mails and chat room discussions with support people from Kindle no solution was found. In fact I was told I could purchase a 'new' refurbished kindle at a reduced price as unfortunately my one year guarantee had expired. So rather disillusioned!!!!!!!!!

I had my 3G stop working and after spending some time on both chat and phone they told me I have to either have it connect to the a wifi network or forget the network and the 3G will work. I used to be able to turn the wifi off and have the 3G work but it's that way no longer. All the problems seem to be coming from the last update which means Amazon is responsible for the problem. Guess they got too busy with all the newer devices.
