Anyone know if this is possible?

I believe that there are a few wi-fi enabled hard drives that you can use, but no hard-wired external drives will work - the USB port on the Fire cannot act as a host.

Not via USB, but you can connect to a Wi-Drive.

Yep. I have a wi-drive that Wife and I share for our Fires.

Kingston Wi-Drive 64 GB USB 2.0 Pocket-sized Portable Storage WID/64GB-A

Works great.

You can read about the WiDrive here: Kingston Digital Wi-Drive 32 GB USB 2.0 Pocket-Sized Portable Storage with US AC Adapter (WID/32GB-A) and you can download the user guide here that will answer your questions: http://media.kingston.com/support/downloads/WiDriveManualforAndroid_Beta.pdf

I love my Kingston wi-drives!! Great for vacations, long car rides.. My husband, my daughter and I can ALL watch different movies off the wi-drive at the same time:)

I use DVD Catalyst to convert my DVD's - which takes quite a long time. Connect the wi-drive to the PC using the USB port. Once movies/music are on the drive you can view the files on the Fire or other device. (Have to download the wi-drive app first)
