You can have multiple devices registered to a single Amazon account.

What are you doing when you are "trying to register" your old Kindle?

You can have an unlimited number of kindles registered to your account. Just find it on your Mange my devices page. This assumes you did not report it missing to Amazon and have them brick it so no one else could register it.

trying to figure out where on site to add it or re-activate it?

You register it from the device itself. Make sure you have wi-fi on and a signal available.

On the amazon website your account-> manage your kindle-> manage your devices (about 1/2 way down the left side)

Cassie Anne says:
No, you don't hook it up to a computer.

This might help: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201239600

You need the email address and password associated with the account.

No. You have to connect using wi-fi. You cannot register a Kindle from the Manage Your Kindle/Manage Your Devices, although you could at one time. You now have to do it wirelessly, from the device itself.

Kindle lost or stolen what to do now

Register it from the device. Which Kindle is it? It should be: Menu--Settings--Registration if it's an e-ink Kindle. If it's a Fire, it probably depends on the specific model, but on my first-gen Kindle Fire, I tap the little gear icon, then tap "More ..." then "My Account."
