We had to wipe the kindle and re-boot it to factory settings, but now we are looking to restore the contacts that they (the store) said would be on the cloud. How do I do this??

Contacts? What contacts? Do you mean books? Archive? If so, you have to register the kindle to the Amazon account it used to be registered to, and it will then be able to access all the books you have stored in the cloud. Follow the instructions here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200307510&#register

Thanks CBP the bookworm. Yes, we did register it (my husbands email account but the kindle is used by my young son) so we did get the books

I would like to recover my contacts (address book w/ tel. #'s, etc) from the cloud. Amazon is replacing my Kindle Fire HD 8.9" and I hate to have to re-type all that information again. Is my contacts app that came with the Kindle backed up in the cloud, and if so, how do get the information back to put it in the replacement Kindle. I can't use the power/data cable because the plug in the bottom of my Kindle is defective, therefore my computer does not recognize it, so I can't back-up to my computer. I think this is what T. Hallinan was talking about.
