RAOK is now officially three quarters of a century old! 75 rooms? Who would have thought it??? It's taken us a while to get here, and there have been ups and downs and bumps in the road, but here we are! And still going strong... AND looking forward to many more rooms.
Knock the snow off your boots, take off your jacket and pull up a chair in front of the roaring fire. It's cold and snowy outside, but inside, there's plenty of good cheer and conversation. Help yourself to one of the hot beverages we have available, and there's also snack-sized snacks (whatever you could wish for). We have plenty of overstuffed chairs around the room where you can curl up with a kindle, filled to bursting with good books. There are footstools and lap rugs, and loaner pets (just see Bane, the room mascot, to sign one out for a while).
What is RAOK? It stands for Random Acts of Kindness, and that's what we're all about - we try to be a oasis in a world where being nice isn't considered 'nice' any longer. An act of kindness doesn't have to involve money. We do gift books to brighten someone's day, but gifting is not required at all. We're here to make our friends laugh, to lend a helping hand if we can, and a sympathetic ear if we can't. If that appeals to you more than the daily grump and snark of real life, stop in, introduce yourself, and visit for a bit.
SAFETY TIPS and INFORMATION:
It's a good idea if you have an open wish list. To check your wish list, click on the link at the top right of any Amazon page. Then click on (one of) your wish lists. From the menu, select "list settings", then "privacy settings". Make sure at least one is set to 'public' so others can see your wish list. It's always a good idea to have a few 99-cent or $1.99 books on there.
You should also make sure that your wish list does not show your real/full name. To check, follow the above instructions to get to your wish list. Click the "list settings" drop down menu. This time, select "Edit Settings" and this will bring you to a screen that shows your privacy settings. The name you see on the Recipient's Name line is the name that is shown to people you GIFT books to. Simply change it to the name you're comfortable with and save. This will prevent your full name from being displayed on your gifts or on your WL.
To change your Account Name, you have to go to Your Account in the upper right corner then Change Account Settings and edit your name. This won't affect anything that you can see except what it shows at the top of the page when it says "Hi Cyndie" instead of "Hi Cyndie MyLastName". And all people will see on their Digital Orders that send me any gifts is Cyndie, not Cyndie MyLastName." (this last one is important, since it doesn't change anything in YOUR view, lots of people end up having their real names showing on their WL instead of their screen names. Also, you need to make that change separately for EACH public wish list.) It sounds complicated, but it really isn't, and it's well worth a few minutes' work.
