I just started up the Kindle Fire HD that we got for my kids for Christmas. I get the basic concept of the FreeTime app- even though I don't think it's the most user friendly app out there. What I don't get is- what would be the purpose of paying a subscription fee for??? A lot of the apps and books seem to have a pretty high price. Is it any different than if I just purchased it outright?

Becca,

If you understand how "Kindle FreeTime" works, you know you can set up individual "profiles" for up to six users. Once a profile is set up, you can enable that user to access books, videos, and apps that you have downloaded to your KF. That's the way the Kindle FreeTime app works.

Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is a subscription service that provides free digital content (books, apps, videos) that you have NOT already downloaded to your Kindle Fire. The best way to think of it is "Prime for Kids." It provides videos (much like Prime Video streaming), apps that you might otherwise have to purchase, and books (again that you would otherwise have to purchase.) As long as you maintain your subscription (which is free for a month) those books, videos, and apps will be available for the user profile(s) you have created in the Kindle FreeTime app in addition to any books, videos, and apps you have downloaded, stored, and enabled in FreeTime from your own collection.

We have a KFTU subscription for our four grandkids--ages 2,4,5, and 7. For a total of $6.99 month, each kiddo gets instant access to hundreds of age/gender appropriate books, apps, and videos. We have purchased some additional content too. Great deal.
