I noticed when I am charging my kindle the charging notification seems to turn on and off. It says charging for a few seconds then it switches to not charging then back again every 5 - 8 seconds.

Is this normal? Anyone else have this problem? Should I report a defect with my new kindle HD?

I suspect that what is going on is that you're using the device while you're charging it and the drain associated with using it is greater than the charge being supplied. If you're using a low power charger, this is especially likely.

Is it essential to use the power cord that came with the kindle HD or can I use the one from my previous kindle? I replaced the cord and it seems to be charging continuously

As long as the cable has a microUSB plug on one end (inserted into the KFHD) and a standard USB plug on the other (plugged into a power source) you should be fine. The key is the power rating of the charger, itself. For optimum speed you need a wall charger designed for a tablet with a rating of at least 5W/1.8 amps. The one below is ideal (identical to the Amazon FastCharger)

PowerGen Dual Port USB 2.1A 10W AC Travel Wall Charger - White

Thank you. I am using the Android charger for my phone and checked the rating and it is the required amps. I think the cord I was using was the problem it has since corrected itself using a different cord.

Glad to hear it. Many chargers for recent smartphones are powerful enough to charge the KF efficiently. The charger for my Droid Razr Maxx, for example, works quite well.
