Fullmetal Alchemist. For me, not just best manga, but one of the best COMICS I've ever read.

J. Gebhard says:
Could you be a bit more specific? Because there are thousands of titles to choose from and you'll end up with a mixed bag.

As far as the best off the top of my head:

Hellsing
FMA or Fullmetal Alchemist
Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei
Lucky Star
Pet Shop of Horrors
Inuyasha - my first love kinda hard to forget

Some that I liked:
Immortal Rain
Berserk
Banana Fish
Phoenix

more than just being good manga, they transcend that and are just good works of literature in general.

Well written shonen:
Hunter x Hunter
Jing King of Bandits
Cat Paradise
Shojo:
Nana
Ultra Maniac

I have every volume of "Pet Shop of Horrors" that has been released, plus "Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo". I think it is "the best EVER!!!" but I'm sure this is not true for everyone.

I also have all of the "Tactics" series, plus a rather rare (softcore yaoi) dojinshi done by the two creators of the manga. Again, not for everyone, but I think it's great.

J. G. Smith says:
Inuyasha.

Claymore.

Vampire Knight.

My top three. They're in my opinion, the best. But there's so many you can never mark the very best. Because I also like Angel Sanctuary a lot, X/1999, Arata: the Legend, Fushigi Yugi:Genbu Kaiden, Godchild, Rurouni Kenshin, Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fairy Cube, Naruto, One Piece, Black Cat, Bleach, Ceres: The Celestial Legend, Alice 19th, (Sensual Phrase, Battle Vixens & The Cain Saga if you're a mature reader)...

Yeah, those are some of my favorites, and in my opinion, the best. :-) read anyone of those and you're sure to enjoy them.

I want to get into manga, but I haven't read anything except for one to three issues of battle angel alita and maisson Ikkoku. I collect anime, but I've always heard that the books are better. Even if that is true I'm affraid that the manga won't deliver. I mean, I feel burned out with anime, and manga seems cheaper. I can tell you what anime I like and dislike, if you respond to my post can you let me know what is good?

I like:

Vexxille
Patlabor
X
fullmetal alchemist
spirited away
tokyo godfathers
when they cry
Mushi-shi
Steam boy
ghost in the shell
serial experiments lain
ninja scroll
Naruto
samurai champloo
zipang

Lot of promise, but doesn't deliver:

Ergo proxy
boogie pop phatom
akira
blue gender
scryed
Samurai 7 (I wanted to love it, there was so much promise)

didn't like

Jin-roh
appleseed
neon genesis
wings of honemaise
Brain powered
gantz

At least I know that I'd like to read:

Lone wolf and cub

Death Note (why has no one mentioned this one yet?!)
Nana (for women/girls)

after reading it I felt like a better person:

Monster - by Naoki Urasawa - a suspense drama about a doctor's search for a serial killer and the lives they affect.
Great teacher Onizuka - by Tohru Fujisawa - comedy about a delinquient who becomes a teacher. hijinks ensue. lessons are learned. cars are destroyed.

Dragon Ball (Greatest of all time)
YuYu Hakusho
Detective Conan (AKA Case Closed)
Rurouni Kenshin (Greatest samurai manga of all time)
Death Note (Best manga made in a long time)
Ranma 1/2 (10x better than Inuyasha)
Lupin III (Old classic)
Black Cat
Fairy Tail
Akira (Classic)
20th Century Boys (Epic)
Hunter x Hunter
Gantz
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2nd longest running manga ever)
Naruto
Bleach
Fullmetal Alchemist
666 Satan (AKA O-Parts Hunter)
Dance in the Vampire Bund (I usually don't like vampires or romance but this is good)

I'm a guy and my manga reflects that.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 3, 2010 7:53:50 PM PDT
My top 5 are (in no particular order):

Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind by Hayao Miyazaki
Devilman by Go Nagai (not available in the U.S., but pretty easy to find Japanese copies on ebay, or find fan translations online)
Fist of the North Star by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara
Dororo by Osamu Tezuka

I would also recommend Lone Wolf and Cub, but I have to say that the teeny tiny books that Darkhorse put out kind of ruin it for me. The small dimensions of the books kind of take away from the illustrations. They're still ok, but I like the bigger, comic book size issues that came out in the 80s and 90s.

lol I love Yaoi and Yuri. Pretty much all of my downloaded manga is one or the other. XD But they're not the only things I read so I guess I can give a few suggestions. ;)

Finished Series:

Ranma 1/2: Simply the funniest and most beautifully flawed series I ever read. It's pretty long but trust me you'll never get bored reading it because the stories and the characters are so entertaining and fun. A classic and a great introduction to Rumiko Takahashi who's like one of the best female manga artists ever. She also did Inuyasha but I got bored with that, lol.

Sailor Moon: Another classic by a great female manga artist (personally I think she's the best there's ever been), Naoko Takeuchi. Superior to the anime and butchered kiddyfied American cartoon in every single way. The characters are more fleshed out, the story is more interesting and less confusing, the pacing is just right, and the artwork is lovely.

Unfinished/Still in the middle of:

Fullmetal Panic!: The series has finished but I haven't collected/read all the volumes yet but it's a fantastic read so far. Action-packed, hilarious, and with a good sprinkle of romance. The artwork is some of the best I've ever seen (besides CLAMP) it's this hybrid mix of the mecha/harem/Shojo/Shounen genres so you get a little taste of most of what manga has to offer lol.

My Heavenly Hockey Club: It's basically a parody of the "reverse" harem situation. One lazy and un-cute girl in a club full of hot, rich but extremely eccentric and utterly clueless boys. This series has so many random and just outright hilarious moments especially in the first three volumes. It pokes fun at a lot of Japanese culture and manga archetypes (otaku especially). Currently waiting for the next volume (s) to be published since the series is still running in Japan. -_- It's a very good read if you like romantic comedies. Ouran Host Club is also good for this concept.

Higurashi: When They Cry: Creepy... just downright creepy. Cute innocent anime girls that'll chop you to bits with glossy eyes and a big smile on their faces. o__o The mystery and the story is too good to resist though so try this if you're into mystery/horror type deals.

Pig Bride: A lovely romantic comedy about a boy who gets lost in the woods and manages to promise himself to wed a girl in a pig mask. The best part of this manga is their relationship and how it develops, it's just so sweet. The artwork is nice I love the color pull outs and the beautiful Korean clothing but the character's faces may take some adjusting to. The last volume is due out next month, can't wait. ^^

Sarasah: Another romantic comedy. The main character is a stubborn, headstrong, can't take a hint idiot that manages to get herself near death and sent back in time to her past life to repair what damage she did to the relationship between her and the guy she likes. Most people agree (myself included) that the main character isn't really likable so it's hard to get through the first few chapters without wanting to roll your eyes and give it up but once you get to the end of volume one and then to the second volume, the story gets really interesting and the series reaches it's potential. Plus the artwork's very lovely. Only the first 4 volumes are out now in English but there's more than 7. Each volume gets better and better so as of now, I'd definitely recommend it.

Spice and Wolf: Can't say much on this series since I've only read the 1st light novel but it's really really good. The story is very unique and endearing (just wikipedia it lol). The two main characters by themselves make it more than enough of a good read. The manga is out now and I'll probably more than likely will be getting it... just to see more of that gorgous Holo. ^__^

Love Witch: A small work done by Naoko Takeuchi which was serialized in a magazine but sadly she never finished. It's only a few chapters long but it was sooo good. -_-
