The Pen Pal

Shaymus O'Shea is the kind man we wonder about when we hear disturbing news stories of people's disappearances and serial killers at large. We wonder what kind of monsters commit such cruel and senseless killings. We associate them with the worst nightmare we have had. Sure, there have been many studies about the psychology behind the profiles of serial killers. Some say it is a disease. It is as if anything we human beings don't like can be blamed on some anomolies of our body and mind.

Read "The Pen Pal", and you will be disturbed and shocked. Remember "Silence of the Lamb"? Remember Joseph Congrad's "Heart of Darkness"? You will get that. But you will also get something else. "The Pen Pal" takes a unique perpective to a crime story and reveals something completely unexpected. The story has a slow start and for a while you may not recognize what you are reading. The setting is early 20th century in the countryside of Ireland. It reads like a tale of the growing up of a boy, surrounded by a large family. You can smell, hear and feel the life of the people in this little town.

And then subtly, you feel something creeping up. Only you can decide what you read, because you will be led through a dialogue, not about somebody else, but about you, as a human being. Only you will decide what you learn.

The author has the style that reminds me of New York Book Bestselling author Augusten Burroughs. He does not just write, he engraves, spits, and shouts out his words.

Cry Havoc is the book I'm promoting today. It's a new take on the classic "boy meets girl, boy leaves girl, girl wants to figure out what happened" tale. The twist? It's set in the zombie apocalypse and the zombies are not what you're expecting!

Story Time

over 37- 4 and 5 star reviews-nominated as the best read of 2011 by the PRG- only $2.99
She has drawn from the many scientific and geological projection and fears published by noted individuals about the future of the northwest - earthquake in Seattle, eruption of Mt. Rainer (Remember Mt St. Helens?), Yellowstone Park area along with demonstrated human nature to describe a frightening but possible disaster scenario. One only has to observe the local terrain and land forms, still smoking volcanoes, past lava flows and fault lines to realize similar disasters occurred in the past and remain a likely future possibility. The only real question is not "if" but "when"! When the even occures I hope the aliens will be there to rescue. I recommend reading the book, but you can expect to loose some sleep as you lay awake pondering the questions of what if and when. Scary thoughts!

This review is from: DEADLINE (Paperback)
Deadline has everything you want from a thriller - lots of action, tons of plot, and yes, a relentless drive towards the resolution. There's a word for that in newspaper terms, I'm pretty sure...

In the interests of transparency, I should point out that the author is an ex-editor of mine, so I may have some reporting bias! That said, I don't normally read thrillers, but I still ripped right through this one.

And if you enjoy this book, there is a sequel: The Scorpion

Just a reminder, this is the last day to get The Scorpion free.

The Black Book is a unconventional romance between a rigid businessman, an uptight fiancee ready for the finer things in life, and a mysterious woman he just met on the train. It uses emotions to discuss dreams, desire, ambition, mixed bold characters which makes this a must read. It's free if you have Amazon Prime and is worth the read!!! It's a 6 chapter preview and I promise you after reading you will be HOOKED!

GEN3: Origin of the Elite (The Elite Saga Book 1)

A military fiction novel with a sci-fi spin.

Terrorism. The word itself invokes fear. In the early days on the war against terrorism, the United States made slow gains. But with wars slowing down the progress and more nations continuing to stack up against them, the highest officials in the government combined their resources to create a project unlike any other in history. Only known as The Project, the government secretly created the first fully genetically transformed man. Enhanced in all areas and given unimaginable strengths, the soldier was the perfect fighting machine. Though the project was eventually ended by order of the President of the United States, the project continued and expanded without his knowledge. Only the future holds the answer to the question; which is worse, the terrorists or the ones who fight them? An event no one expected allows that question to be answered...

Mean is a novelette (longer than a short-story but shorter than a novella) that follows Cassandra Connelly's therapy sessions. She goes to a psychiatrist seeking help, because she believes she is mean inside. She has anger issues, and there's a person she truly hates; so much she is convinced he or she deserves to die. She is thinking about killing said person - would the therapy help her decide not to kill somebody or push her to do exactly that?

Recent customer review:
What a fun read! Action packed and compelling the story of Chuck Brandt grabs you on the first page and doesn't let you go until the last. I just had to keep reading...Chuck, a world class assassin, has changed his ways only to find himself duped by his employer. He must rely on himself and the skills from his past to overcome the betrayal. And does he ever!...Be prepared for a great adventure.

The Pen Pal

is a wonderful view into the mind of a serial killer. It chronicles his life from a horrible childhood under the abusive hand of his father, to his love with a woman almost twice his age; to his adult life as a caring and loving father. We see a man living in society as an upstanding member educating the young minds at the university and loving his wife with a passion most women wish to see from their husbands. However, we also see a man with a deep dark secret that stems from a deep inner yearning to see pain inflicted on others. Half way through the novel we are transposed between the his view and that of his strong willed daughter who ends up being the one who tries to bring down the serial killer, she doesnt know is her father. We sit on the edge of our seats and wait to see what happens. The dramatic irony is rich throughout the last part of the novel. It was a fast paced read that kept you turning from page to page wanting to find out what happens to Shyamus and Katee O'Shea.

"Anderson proves that he has an imagination, expertly blending
current and future technology. There's plenty of fodder to entertain military enthusiasts and a slight nod to The Terminator series in the form of an assassin clone-one of the tens of thousands of highly trained killing machines created by Minisoft-who has named himself Clint (after watching Dirty Harry movies) and whose emotions have somehow developed enough to allow him to fall in love with a human woman. However, that doesn't mean he won't kill her if the right sequence is activated." - Kirkus Reviews

"......the last in Anderson's trilogy completes a lively, gadget-filled action-adventure." - Kirkus Reviews

In recognition of the review and posting of world known and esteemed Kirkus Reviews summary of "The Last Dance", for an extremely limited time, "Last Dance" is available FREE in all major eBook formats. www.smashwords.com

One if by Air, Two if by Sea:
What if everything you ever believed turned out to be false, that everything that who and what you are, turned out to be engineered? Former F16 Pilot Nicholas "Mad Dog" Pantera, now a Private Investigator for hire, is drawn into a shadowy world of intrigue, murder and suspense. Hired by a shady insurance company to investigate two seemingly unrelated "suspicious" deaths, he discovers a strange oceanic world of beautiful mermaid models, lies and betrayals, corporate greed and human manipulation at the cellular level.

The High Road Less Traveled:
In the action packed sequel to "One if by Air, Two if by Sea", jaded ex-cop turned private investigator Nicholas Pantera is back in action. Six months later, Nick receives an unexpected visitor with news that could change the world balance of power forever. From the mountains of Colorado, to the Frau Mauro highlands of Earth's moon and the trackless expanses of the Pacific Ocean, "High Road" is a high octane high tech thrill ride that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Like a high power sniper rifle, this is the one you never see coming.

The Last Dance Can Be Murder:
The Last Dance picks up just after High Road and has Nick again being dragged into gigantic and morally questionable dilemas that will test his faith, compassion and comittment to the truth of free will, morality, American Justice, the Constitution; those whom he holds most dear, and to the woman that he would sacrifice anything for. The Pantera series will make you laugh, make you cry, make you think, make you go "hmmmmm" and wonder "what if" as genetic engineering in the real world advances and brings some of these now-fictitous questions on to the global news scene. Until the 1960s, space travel was fantasy too, so never say never .............

Those of you who may download a sample of Into The Twilight: The True Origins of Abe Lincoln need to know that this 60,000 word novel has alternating narrators. The sample and "Look Inside the Book" contain only part of the first chapter which is narrated by Abram Enloe and can give the impression that the whole book is narrated by him. On the contrary, the wife, and then young Nancy Hanks, take their turns telling the story.

5 star reviewer comments:
*****Annis Ward Jackson can be depended upon to produce a well-written and well-researched story.......ITT has really captivated me with its rich details and descriptions of early US people, their customs and influences. My interest in Abraham Lincoln has increased tremendously.
*****The legend of the true origins of Abraham Lincoln has existed around North Carolina since his birth. This author takes the legend and weaves it into a very believable story. Annis Ward Jackson is a great writer.

Into The Twilight: The True Origins of Abe Lincoln
Walk along with Abraham Enloe, his wife Sarah, and their bondservant, Nancy Hanks, as their lives become inextricably intertwined.

Enloe, father of several children, is a successful farmer and well-respected magistrate in Puzzle Creek, a small community in the mountains of North Carolina in the early 1800's. He has battled the elements and wild animals, and fought in the Revolutionary War but nothing has prepared him for the overwhelming passion he comes to feel for young Nancy Hanks.Enloe, Sarah, and Nancy narrate this story, each from their individual perspectives. Each account is filled with selfish and unselfish love, sensuality and lust, and joy and sorrow.

Into The Twilight: The True Origins of Abe Lincoln is based on traditional lore that goes back to the early 1800's. The story was common knowledge in western North Carolina but many accounts also appeared in newspapers around the country when Abraham Lincoln first ran for public office.
If actual proof (DNA is in process) could be found of Lincoln's having been born elsewhere, perhaps the story would fade away. Until then, the legend lives on.

Into the Deep: A Story of Resolution

5 star Reviewer comments:
* This was just an excellent book. The writing was so well done and obvious the author was so intrigued by the story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great read and one that fully and totally absorbs your mind.
* I love everything I've read so far by this author (and no, I don't know her). Her writing and descriptions are beautiful in all of her books. The first sentence of this book is as follows: "The surface of the lake quivered, a steady breeze creating a never-ending ripple of diamonds as droplets caught the sun in their brief suspension." I can see the sun and the lake with its sparkling ripples, and I can feel the breeze.
*Into the Deep cannot be pigeon-holed into one category. Yes, it is fiction but historical details of the TVA's construction of Watauga Lake and other events such as the flood of 1940 are accurate. By the same token, ITD could be classified a murder/mystery. However, no matter the category, it is an excellent read!
*I loved this story of resolution, steeped full of historical facts and you felt a connection to the woman as she told it.

Against a backdrop of beautiful Watauga Lake in the mountains of eastern Tennessee comes the story of Violet Thurston Oliver, a descendant of pioneers and a woman with no intention of ever vacating the land that has been in her family for nearly two hundred years. However, Violet discovers that so-called progress grinds on with little concern for her personal feelings.

Proud, stoic, and self-sufficient, Violet withstands an abusive marriage and forced relocation from her beloved farm in the late 1940's when the Tennessee Valley Authority covered over six thousand acres with a dam to provide electricity and recreational opportunities.

The lake has been Violet's sorrow and her salvation. Will her fifty-year-old secret remain safe or will it rise from the depths and threaten the remaining years of a life of hard work, integrity and perserverance?
