Thanks Tim. It's a whole new world for me, exciting and scary at the same time...lot like dating. ;-) Where can I find your blog on the Proust effect. Love to read it.

I had 27 downloads in the first three hours and then 400 in the next three hours and now it's five a minute. It goes on until midnight Sunday.

I am curious about your book I wrote a blog recently on the Proust effect. I'll give it a look.

This is all encouraging as this week I, too, launched the first two of my new books in a series of four, using the Kindle free promotional offer. So far I've given away about 130 books, and the second one starts it's free promotion today. Still learning how all this stuff works and have yet to make a sale (or even figure out how to see the rankings) but encouraged, that it seems to be working for others. My own series is nonfiction 'nature field guides' to human sexual attraction chemistry ("Guide to Butterflies" haha). I'd love it if any of you into the dating scene or simply interested in getting a handle on the whole attraction, relationship, dating, sex thing would download your own free copy and if inspired write a review so I can improve them before going to a print version. Thanks,
Dan Terry

Congratulations Tim on your awards and good luck with your promo! Very curious to hear how it goes for you. Please let us know.

I bought Dan Poynter's book on KDP Select Free day promotions and followed his promotion instructions carefully. We had 10,800 downloads the first two days. Most folks find two or three days work best for Free days. Some folks look at your book a time or two before downloading. Good luck. KDP SelectTM: Navigating Kindle's Freebie Day

The Leopard Tree with 17 5.0 star reviews, is FREE this weekend (Sat.&Sun - Aug. 25,26) on Amazon. This story of hope for three Kenyan orphans has won two awards - An EVVY for literary fiction and first place in the Writer's Digest International Self-published Competition in the Young Adult category. We find the story appeals to people of all ages. We did our first free weekend in July and had 10,800 downloads. We encourage anyone who reads it to review. All the best with your reading and your writing if you are an author.

well interesting number. I have my erotica book Distance Means Little to Love has 126 downloads as of the first full day of downloads. Not a lot I know but the interesting part is that I actually have downloads across each country that we get reports on. Yes folks smut is universal. Hope that it gets my name known a bit more since I have a ton of not erotic stuff out there waiting for notice

If you are interested in erotic with a strong romantic turn, then please look into Distance Means Little to Love six short tales connect by poetry about a loving couple that has to deal with a long distance relationship

David I take it you can only do that with books that arent part of another site. I have two novels that are on Kobo and Amazon

David- Thank you so much for your feedback... what a brilliant strategy. I had no clue that we could offer a portion of our book to KDP Select. I suppose I will know how to do this once I get on Select.
Much appreciated,

Thanks John, I appreciate the vote of confidence, however, I wouldn't go so far as to say I know what I'm doing. :0)

Jennifer, I have found KDP Select to be the easiest and most cost effective way to promote my books. The plural is critical though, as it works especially well for a series of books. For example, if you only have one book I would suggest taking the first 1/3 (or so) and placing it in KDP Select for 99 cents and free promos. Put the whole book up for sale at $2.99 or more. Give away the "teaser" to introduce yourself to readers who will buy the full book. It's worked for me. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Michael, I grabbed "Enter the Sandman" and clicked share "I just bought" on Facebook. I think we should all do that, when we can and for books that we think we will like. Even when you grab a book for Free there is an "I just bought" for Facebook and Twitter and something else... LOL. I'm happy to help spread the word. I also put in a comment that I "bought" it for FREE today. Just a thought...

John,, I visited the festival many, many years ago.. Do they still have the bagpipers? I loved seeing all the clan plaids and listening to their martial music. A beautiful city, indeed.

This is the beautiful, wonderful city. It's really a bit like a big town, but a wonderful place to live. I've been fasting for three days, but not today and tomorrow I can go out into the Edinburgh festival, the most wonderful time in the wonderful city. I'm not from Edinburgh, but I love living here! Some of the people are cold and a bit English in that they don't talk to each other, but I love living here and feel most fortunate about that! You should visit it during the Festival when the unpleasant aspects are enveloped!

Congratulations on your success.
Thank you so much for the invaluable information you have posted. I am glad to know that KDP select worked well for you. I have been vacillating on the issue for days and now your generous feedback has helped me decide to go for it. It is for 90 days and I can't see much risk with it.
Thanks again.

Thank you, John. Enjoy your leisure in one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited :) Jennifer

Jennifer! I had two novels published and eight plays produced before my pal encouraged me to the Kindle thing, just as I was retiring to get more into meditation, and it's been good fun. But almost everybody knows more about it than me!! Barbara knows what she's talking about and is making some money as well!! I hardly read these days, but good luck with your book!!

I joined select back in December and ran my first promo. I did well at a little over 3,000 downloads. The days after saw sales in the 70's with 11 borrows. My book went from almost unseen to visible and put me on lists where I was selling an average of 16 per day.

I went free again in March and gave away over 13,000 book's. The days following my book sold in the 150's settling down to an average of 20 a day. My book made it to the best-seller list in my category as well. Big bonus!

I have always asked what happens in the long run. My book went from selling 1 a day to an average of 20 and have well over 20,000 ebooks out there now. This I give the select program full credit for, however, things may have changed since then.

I ran my third promo from the 2nd to the 6th of August. Just a week ago. I gave away 2,000 book's, which certainly isn't bad, but it goes to show you what a roller-coaster ride this is. Also the sales afterward were very slow. I sold 12 the day after, my rank went from the 5-8,000 range to 60,000. It took several days to recover, make my daily average, and stop bouncing around. My rank is still a little higher than before this last promo.

I have heard that the algorithms have changed and freebies are no longer getting the same type of ride they once were. It also might be that because I'd already given so many there weren't as many new people seeing it in the same places people advertise these things.

I think with only 90 days as a commitment and very little cost it is quite an effective way to promote a book. I don't think it has the same punch it once had for free book's to linger on the best seller lists, which may be a good thing for everyone, but it is still certainly worth a shot.

Good luck!
