Only someone who is dead inside can take charge of the preparations for his own funeral without feeling even the slightest pang of nerves. Wilfred Gord threw the coffin catalogue as far as he could, barely a meter and a half, and lay back on the bed thoughtfully. He still hadn´t discounted cremation. The idea that his body would rot in a box had yet to convince him.

Hi there,

Here is an excerpt from book 4 of my peacekeeper series:

"Resume your search, Phoenix, and go to maximum altitude," Jim ordered.

"Aye, sir," Namid responded and throttled her fighter away from the victims, all too willing to put that scene behind her.

A bit later, she came to a larger city. "Oh my God!" Namid said in shock as she saw the hundreds of bodies lying where they had fallen along the streets of the city. "My God, sir. Are, are you getting this?" she asked quietly as she stared at the dead and noted not a single living soul in the city below.

"We see, Phoenix. Proceed to the next city. We have to determine the extent of the spread of this disease," Jim replied.

"Roger, Peacekeeper, on my way," Namid replied and tore her eyes from the scene below. She throttled up the fighter and soon she was back over the rural countryside. All too soon, she came to the next small community and saw a similar scene. In the streets below were scores of dead bodies.

It was the same at the next city, and the next. Finally, Namid flew within sight of columns of smoke rising into the air to the east. Turning on her camera, she sent the feed to the Peacekeeper and reported the sighting. Jim asked her to fly toward the nearest smoke column to see what she could learn. The flight to the designated smoke column took just minutes. Namid saw the source of the black oily smoke column and stared stunned at the tableau unfolding on the ground beneath her.

Lee Doty says:
Please come check out : Out of the Black

It's a character-driven lighthearted thriller that starts off as near-future scifi but deepens into an urban action/horror/fantasy novel as the mystery unfolds.

It was a semifinalist in the Thriller category of the 2009 Independent Publisher Book (IPPY) Awards, and has been on several kindle bestseller lists since January.

Normally, the kindle edition is 85% off of the paperback price at $2.99, but right now Amazon has the kindle edition on sale for only $2.39.

I think it's a swell book, but seasoned kindlers will know that listening to the author's opinion of his work is often less effective. Please take a few moments to check out the customer reviews, which have been fantastic (thank you!). Here are two brief excerpts from the more recent reviews:

=======================

D. Buxman (Amazon top 500 reviewer)
"Lee Doty is one of the few authors capable of addressing time in a non-linear fashion without losing the reader and he uses this skill judiciously and to great effect. What I liked best about the book was its character development. When an author can turn an overweight phlebotomist into a sympathetic super-hero there is no other way to describe it than: COOL. While the action and suspense were intense throughout the book, I also found myself laughing out loud in more than one instance. I really enjoyed this book and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel."

Kym Flannery (Perth, Western Australia Australia)
Buyer Beware!
If you like Sci-Fi with a dose of the Fantastic, You will truly enjoy this story. It's high paced action and gentle humour is seemless, the story is fresh and surprising, every twist will keep you guessing. If however, like me you have tight work deadlines and numerous overdue assignments, abandon all hope! this is one of the best reads I've had all year. From the opening lines to the last I was spellbound. "Lee Doty curse you for my sleeplessness". I'm hooked and I want more. I want to have coffee and cornflakes with Ping, give Anne a hug(carefully!) and meet Rae, Ohhh boy!...how does a writer create so many loveable kickass characters!

Author Cassandra Ellis is thrilled to death when her first murder mystery novel is released. She enjoys glowing reviews, praise from friends and family, and all the excitement that comes from being published.

But her celebration is cut short when she becomes the primary suspect for a real life murder. One of the sources she used while writing her novels has been shot, and Cassie is the last to have seen him alive. With her passion for research, she always wanted a firsthand view of the Baltimore City Police Department's inner workings. She never dreamed she'd get that experience by being taken in for questioning as a suspect.

When another of her experts is murdered a few days later, she decides it's time to investigate matters firsthand, much to the displeasure of James Whittaker, the homicide detective assigned to the case.

Before more friends die... or before Cassie herself is targeted.

I have two very different books published on Amazon. One is a story about a boy who comes from an abusive home (like Harry) and when it gets to be too much, he finds a small stone and it transports him to Glendalough. A world where everyone comes from a very tough background. Well, they are the first people to really have faith in Matty, and they insist he was sent to them to become a Knight! Matty quickly falls in love with the lush green hills and the people of Glendalough, but he has never believed he could do much of anything. While he trains to become a knight and save Glendalough from encroaching predators, his confidence builds. He wants to save Glendalough along with his new friends Whit and Basil. But can he find the strength and the confidence, or will he let everyone down?

Whispers of Angels is totally different. It was written for anyone who has lost a loved one or best friend to tragedy, cancer, old age etc. It's about a family who loses a child, and while they start out feeling Michael has just been ripped from their lives, they soon begin to understand that he is always close by. Whispering to them, giving them gentle nudges in their lives and helping to keep them safe. Not only does he help his own family, but he also whispers to an old man in a nursing home, someone who prays for his time to come, until Michael reminds him of the best day of his life.

Shades of Gray: A Jude Magdalyn Novel (The Jude Magdalyn Series)
Jude Magdalyn Henries has what some--okay, many--would call an unconventional life. Orphaned at birth, raised by nuns, teenage runaway, fake tarot card reader--there is very little about Jude that's normal. Jude plays hard, which means she has to work at least semi-hard, but when she accepts an invitation to do a private tarot reading, "unconventional" takes on a whole new meaning.

Almost nothing shocks Jude anymore, but when she finds out that she's the last in a line of matriarchal leaders of a magical group, shock is definitely what she feels. The Covenant has been waiting for Jude to come into her birthright for the past twenty five years. And then there's the war between vampire factions for control of the city of New Orleans. Jude and the Covenant must choose a side, and fast.

If that wasn't enough, the head of the rival vampire faction is doing his best to finish filling up Jude's social calendar--or rather, erasing it completely. Hart says he only wants to talk to Jude, but there's something about a vampire who is willing to drain anyone and everyone who stands in his way that makes having a sit-down feel like a bad idea. In the end, the fate of the city hinges on one last battle, ranging from roof tops to Bourbon Street to the bottom of the Mississippi River.

When they meet through a Classics Book Club, each thinks the other one's life is so much better than her own. But is the grass really greener on the other side of the fence?

Hello readers!
My first novel On the Soul of a Vampire is now available on Kindle for $2.99, as well as in paperback for $11.44. This is a story that harks back to the more literary style of vampire novel, such as "Dracula" or "Interview with the Vampire," yet with a very new concept of what a vampire is and does. Anyone who has ever questioned the logic of a dead and soulless creature who, nonetheless, experiences love and sexual desire or wondered how it might be possible to destroy a creature with no heartbeat by a stake to that non-functioning organ may find interesting the answers suggested by this story. No sparkly fairy tale vampires with the "vegetarian" option or creatures of the night looking to add more notches to their belt, On the Soul of a Vampire not only re-examines the vampire legend, but looks deep inside the human soul.

Thank you so much for the chance to post. Happy reading to all!

I just got the sweetest review for my debut novel Out of the Black. Even better, it's from an amazon top 1000 reviewer. I've included the review below, as well as an excerpt from D. Buxman, a top 500 reviewer that I received earlier this year.

Here's her review.
=========================
5-star
A wonderful surprise, September 4, 2010
By Margaret Dybala "too many books, too little time" (Amazon top 1000 reviewer)

What did I expect? Just a little light shlock reading for a hot summer's afternoon! And what did I get? A great adventure written with intelligence and humor. Who would imagine that a book about wizards, martial arts, super heroines, FBI agents, cthulhu-like monsters from beneath (so to speak), would be so just plain smart and readable!

I bought this book purely on whim -- I'd never heard of the author or the title. It was an amazon recommedation (it's a bit scary, I guess, how well they know me!). This is so good that I'm adding the author's name to my list of periodic searches, in hopes that when any new book comes out, I can get it right away!

I recommend this book without hesitation. You will love these good characters: Ping Bannon (Chinese-American detective and martial arts expert); Anne, who was truly in the wrong/right place at the right/wrong time; Alex Ahmed, wizard in training; Rae, police woman and beloved of Alex; Dec, a special child gifted and raised by a wizard, and on and on. Even the minor characters are just great.

Enjoy!

D. Buxman (Amazon top 500 reviewer)
I'm usually not interested in sci-fi books and find my mind wandering early on as an author explains a world without anchors to which my earth-bound mind can grasp. Out of the Black was a wonderful exception to my typical experience. If you can imagine a future like Blade Runner, you will be comfortable here. The plot is fast paced and complex without being incomprehensible. Lee Doty is one of the few authors capable of addressing time in a non-linear fashion without losing the reader and he uses this skill judiciously and to great effect. What I liked best about the book was its character development. When an author can turn an overweight phlebotomist into a sympathetic super-hero there is no other way to describe it than: COOL. While the action and suspense were intense throughout the book, I also found myself laughing out loud in more than one instance. I really enjoyed this book and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

An interview with LB Gschwandtner right here - all about the book, pubbbing on Kindle, gardening with no clothes and more.

http://kindle-author.blogspot.com/2010/09/kindle-author-interview-l-b.html

A raving fan writes:

Like many women, Katelyn Cross has a secret life, a side of herself that comes out only when no one else is around. But it isn't just that she gardens naked...it's all the things her nakedness represents: Katelyn's desire for freedom and artistic expression, her ambivalence about getting married, her need to speak her own unvarnished truth. Because she and Maze are summer residents in the sleepy New England hamlet of Trout River Falls, Katelyn has never gotten involved in the problems the town faces, but when the all-female town council persuades her to take them on a river-rafting trip, Katelyn's outsider status rapidly melts away. Can Katelyn help save the town? Can the town save Katelyn? The Naked Gardener has everything readers crave in contemporary women's fiction - a complex and interesting heroine at a crossroads in her life, her sassy and unpredictable friends, and plenty of adventure.

Hope you'll give it a look and enjoy!

My debut novel, Dirty Hands, has received 7 five star reviews out of 14. It is a dark and fast paced crime novel with well-developed characters that give the story an emotional impact.
Here is the book description:
In this fast paced crime thriller, Terrell Hawkins, his closest cousin, and his best friend set out to have a good time on a Saturday night. Alcohol, marijuana, and immodest girls who like to partake in both are part of that pursuit. They don't expect the debauchery to end in tragedy, just as they don't expect their horrible response to embroil them in a struggle to avoid the authorities while growing increasingly distrusting of each other. Terrell and the others quickly learn that dirty hands can lead to desperate acts and that the worst of circumstances can cause even the best of friends to become enemies.

Charles Ofay and Yolanda Byrd have a one night stand. Several months later Charles gets a call from the hospital informing him that he has a child and the mother has passed away. Charles arrives at the hospital with the false realization that he is there to help out a fraternity brother in trouble. He initially runs but after much thought decides to step up and raise his bi-racial daughter. Things are initially very tough for Charlie and his daughter Sankofa. Charlie is evicted from his fraternity's house and is forced to live out of his car while he searches for a new place for the two of them to live. The color of his daughter's skin starts presenting itself as an obstacle in this search. And so his education begins. He had likely seen this type of racism before but had no reason to pay attention to it previously. Now it is personal and his enlightened journey and self exploration begin. Through a story that spans decades, we meander back and forth through time much as the sankofa bird of African folklore did it its message of 'go back and retrieve it' - meaning you can't understand the future if you don't pay attention to the past. Through the education of Charlie and the journey he is undertaking with his aptly named daughter Sankofa, we begin to unveil a story that explores and examines human nature and issues of race and racism.

I just noticed that Amazon discounted my novel Regression to $2.39 for all users, not just international purchasers. This first installment of the Infinion Trilogy has a 4.1 star rating across 54 reviews, and held a place on the Amazon Science Fiction and Fantasy bestsellers list for 28 days as a new release. The second book in the series will be available next month, with promotional copies up for grabs during my blog tour in October.

Regression is an alternate history time travel thriller. Twenty-eight men have twenty-six years to save the world, but all they really need is one woman! Adya Jordan has an extra strand of DNA hidden in her cells, and an extra lifetime's worth of memories hidden in her mind. Although she is only fourteen in 1985, she remembers being a forty-year-old with a full life in 2011 and seeks to recapture the life she had loved. Mysterious megacorp Three Eleven, run by a group of elite scientists, wants Adya to join their group as they struggle to prevent a global disaster. She is forced to choose between the family she loves and the world she lives in.

Look for Evolussion on Kindle and in print in October.

Brief description:

Charles Ofay and Yolanda Byrd have a one night stand. The town they both go to school in is host to two very different colleges. Ben Tillman University is a mostly white school and their across town neighbor Freedom College is an historically black institution. Their encounter is soon forgotten.

Several months pass and Charlie gets a call from the local hospital informing him of very surprising news. Yolanda had died in an accident not long after child birth and he has a daughter. He is the child's only living relative. Charlie initially runs, but after much soul searching decides to step up and raise his bi-racial daughter.

The mythological sankofa bird of African folklore tells us that you can't intelligently move into the future if you don't pay attention to the lessons of the past. Through the education of Charlie and the journey he is undertaking with his aptly named daughter Sankofa, the story explores and examines human nature and issues of race and racism.

Hi there folks,

Here's an excerpt from book six of the peacekeeper series:

Outside the shelter, he heard the bear begin to circle the tree. It was noisy as it scratched at the ground and leaves around the spruce tree. He waited until the bear was on the side of his shelter opposite the trail before making his move, and then Evan darted out from under the tree and lunged to his feet. He was almost to the trail when he heard the bear let out a roar. Behind him, Evan heard the sound of the bear running in pursuit.

The moment he made it to the trail, Evan turned toward the stream, running as fast as he could. He had a desperate hope of crossing the stream before the bear was in position to see him, and then hiding on the other side. He hoped that the bear would think he was in the water and seek him there. If he did so, then Evan planned to slip away and make his way to the open field. He'd hide there for the remainder of the night. In that field, he'd have a chance of seeing the bear coming.

Evan could hear the bear running behind him. It sounded to him as if the bear was right on his heels, so the boy redoubled his efforts. Fear produced adrenaline made it possible for him to run faster.

The boy felt the hot breath of the bear on the back of his neck. His terror caused him to emit another involuntary scream. He wouldn't have thought it possible, but he ran even faster. Then his foot hit a snag and the young man went flying face first toward the ground.

Sorry to leave you folks with a little cliffhanger, but I can't reveal more without getting into key spoilers.

This is only the beginning.

Soon the death cult's victims will rise from the dead to exact revenge!

Hell of the Dead.

Caught in the middle are Father Nolan, a kind priest trying to save the cult's next victim, and Constable Jacoby, a man with an agenda all his own.

From the horrifying encounter between the cult and armed soldiers on a dark jungle road to the final showdown between the living and the dead, Hell of the Dead will not make your blood run cold; it will drain you of every drop!
