AnnieB says: know I can't pass by an OED thread with out adding my $.02 worth.
I want to say that OED is the reason that I am a big supporter of indie authors. I was able to send a kindle to my grandson overseas filled with books of all kinds. He sent me a message this week telling me he takes it with him everywhere...

So it is because of you authors and your generousity a young man or woman somewhere sits for a few minutes and forgets where they are...and dreams of home.

Survival at Starvation Lake

My daughter Sarah Miller is a Graphic Designer for the Marine Corp and designed the cover of my novel Survival at Starvation Lake. Tragically, on the same day my novel was published July 19, 2010 she lost her Marine Corp Engineer husband, Paul J. Miller to a road side bomb in Afghanistan. When I heard about Operation Ebook Drop, I emailed Amazon's costumer service and asked if they could design a mechanism where by an author or anyone else who wanted to donate could pay in advance for copies of a ebook. Then members of the military could down that title for free. I asked them to provide two tallies, one showing how many copies of a title were available for down load and another showing how many of copies of that title had been down loaded by people in the military.

I will look for Amazon's response and post it. They were less than helpful.

My email address is

I am truly sorry to hear about your son-in-law. The sacrifices that our armed services members make to keep our country free and to enable us to do what we do is the reason that OEBD exists. It is but a small contribution on our part, but I have heard from service members and families how much it means to them. Thank you again, Edward C. Patterson for coming up with this idea and for your undying devotion to keeping this service going. May there be some day in our future where there will no longer be "deployed" troops who can download our books.

Here is the email I received from Amazon. Actually, it is just one of their responses. I emailed them a number of times trying to get them involved. I see this idea as a win, win, win. It is a win for Amazon because they sell more books. It is a win for the people who pay for the books as it is a way to give something back to our troops, and it is a win for the people in the military because they get free books. I would like to purchase copies of my own book so they could be down loaded by military personnel as a honor to my son in law who gave his life for our country.

Hello Gary,

The concerned team reviewed your request to offer free books to military and their dependents; unfortunately, we are still unable to provide you with such an option. We'll definitely consider your needs when making improvements to offer this in the future, and will let you know when this option becomes available.

Thank you for your interest in publishing on Kindle.

Hi Ed,

I'm on your main list as an Operation Ebook author, but wanted to let you know I'm with Vanilla Heart Publishing. Didn't know if you wanted to move me to that section or leave me where I am. It makes no difference to me; I'm just proud to participate. :-)

I sent out a e-drop for my thriller Mindbenders earlier today. About a hundred emails went out and I got nine 'cannot deliver' messages immediately in return. Hopefully some of them are misspellings or folks who've left the service but surely some are no longer around to receive. I'm not a fan of these wars but it reminds you what our soldiers are risking out there. It feels like the right thing to offer something in return.

Hi Ed,

If it really isn't any trouble, could I be moved to the Vanilla Heart group? They feel like my family away from family - a great group to be a part of. But if it's time consuming, don't worry about it - it isn't a big deal.

My nephew just returned from Afghanistan and my brothers and cousins also served. I am proud to be a part of this project and I hope my book brings some laughter to their grim surroundings.

I have made no promises to anyone, so I can post links to your books. :)

The Jade Owl
Look Away Silence
Surviving an American Gulag
The Dragon's Pool

More later. I don't want to boggle the readers' mind with all your great titles, that you some how find time to write while doing this important job administering OEBD.

I invite other writers to link one of Edward's books as you post your own in this thread. It is the least we can do.

Military libraries and books pushed back the shadows of loneliness for me in many parts of the world. Ed's efforts to keep a steady flow of free books going to our sisters and brothers now serving is commendable and I'm thankful that my few works are a small part of that effort.

Highly recommend Ed's Surviving an American Gulag
