SOLVED! A New Kind of Country by Dorothy Gilman of the Mrs. Pollifax series. Much thanks to Andria over at GoodReads in the group What's The Name of That Book??? http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/185
Several years ago I read a book by a woman who moved to Nova Scotia (or that area) with her teenage son (maybe 2 kids?), and told her story of how she learned about living in this community which I believe was largely fishermen. I remember one section about living through her first big storm, how neighbors just showed up to help; how the salt water wind was very damaging...
I'm going nuts trying to find it. I think the author also wrote fictional books, but this was more of a memoir. She may have moved following a divorce or her husband's death - it was definitely about her being independently responsible for her life and her kid(s) for the first time in a long while.
Any help you can give me is much appreciated....
