I've never really gotten into it. I have Scum by Napalm Death and the aforementioned carcass compilation.

thats funny that you say that about Swansong. When I first heard that album my first reaction in my head was, "these riffs are what Mustaine has been trying to do for a while." The vocals sound out of place for that album though, would have been a great Megadeth album circa Countdown Youthanasia though

Ben! Get thee to a record store now and purchase Carcass - Necroticism:Descanting The Insalubrious.
If you have any Carcass compilation album (and like it) you owe it to yourself to hear their best album and one of the top 5 DM albums of the 90's. Heck, of all time...

...Now, I appreciate "Scum" for what it is, but Carcass' later, more developed albums surpass it by light-years. I really don't think it can even come close. Sure, "Scum" is a historic piece of music and an important step forward for the genre - it was raw, unique and the style (Grindcore) had been virtually unheard of until then - but if you're looking for crushing, brutal, fast, gnarly DM/Grindcore and the sound of a band truly coming into their own and raising the bar as it hadn't yet been raised, then Necroticism is for you.

^^^He's right on this one Ben..........Necroticism is, and I've always thought also, one of the best albums to come out in that time period. Period. The songwriting is spot on. The whole album flows perfectly. They could not have matched it on any level, and I'm glad they didn't try to..........................

1. I like SWANSONG...i don't get the whole megadeth references, but whatever.

2.necrotism is their best cd as a whole, imo

3.early napalm (although influential) isn't in the same league with 90's era carcass

Swan Song is mediocre, but Heartwork is great, as good as Necroticism. It's not even proper melodic death metal, which it gets accused of being. It's more hard rock influenced and some of the solos remind me of late 80s Whitesnake. It's not death n roll either. It's a great album nonetheless.
