Baker, best of luck to you. I'm also available if you need additional muscle. I may not be as impressive as the KILLER KOALA. But I have perfected my catfight skills. No one pulls hair like I do.

Second best wood-chipper scene ever.....first best being the one from 'Tucker & Dale vs Evil'. Fargo's being more serious, and Tucker's being hilarious.

Tough call. But I think Fargo wins 1st Place (by a foot). Tucker & Dale should take the very honorable 2nd Place award.

...and maybe a "Thank You for Participating" trophy to Woodchipper Massacre (1988).

re: 'Woodchipper Massacre'

Now THAT sounds good! I will not rest until I have tracked it down. Wood-chippers + Massacres = My type of film. Throw in the fact that it is from the 80's, and I'm in heaven.

Hello, my name is: ALICE says:
Out of curiosity, does anyone know why the Coen Bros didn't direct Gambit (2012)?

~~~~~~~~~
My guess is because they caught so much flack for directing other "remakes" recently (the critically maligned 'Ladykillers' and the controversial 'True Grit' (some old Duke fans still have chapped hides over that one, even without having seen it, only on principle!)
Also, I don't believe they ever intended to direct 'Gambit'.
... one more guess, because they might consider it too lightweight, and they'd rather direct some more personal films right now. They might feel they have no time for all the movie ideas they have, so why not let some others try them out.
That's what they did with that Sam Raimi movie they wrote the script for in the mid-'80s (someone help me with the title, I forget it?)
'Intolerable Cruelty' was intended for another director, and they also wrote an adaptation of James Elroy's 'Cuba Libra' for another director.
I guess now Coen Bros scripts are more marketable in Hollywood.
A vote for Billy Bob enduring a long shoot littered with barbers poles. Talk about suffering for ones art!
In reply to an earlier post on May 23, 2012 12:41:10 AM PDT
Billy Bob's finest performance, or at least up there with 'A Simple Plan' and 'Sling Blade'.
My favorite scene is where he's musing about the hair on the floor as symbolic of human waste. The images he conjures up in his soliloquy remind me of all those pictures of the rooms full of human hair they showed from the Nazi concentration camps, piled up like a mountain. Horrible. Surreal. But the scene, however grim, builds to a wonderful punchline:
Ed: "I'm gonna mingle it with common house dirt."
[His brother-in-law speaks up...]
Frank: "What the hell are you talking about!?"
Ed: "I don't know. Skip it."
Baker,
That's really a shame. The Coens have a wonderful knack for making me appreciate actors I normally dislike (ex. Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Nick Cage, and George Clooney). I was thrilled to see Gambit included Colin Firth (#2 on the Top Ten List of Actors I would leave my husband for) and Alan Rickman (#4 on the same list). Unfortunately it also includes Cameron Diaz. Every time I see her, I'm overwhelmed with the irrational desire to punch the tv. Guess it was too much to hope for some more of that Coen magic.
On second thought, Cameron was ok in Being John Malkovich and that one Top Gear episode.
I can relate to that re John Goodman. I already liked the other three. I'm quite sick of John Macy, but started to love him because of Fargo. I think the Coen characters have shown Clooney at his absolute best and I'm sure he'd love to work with them again on something totally fresh.
I absolutely loved the casting and everything about the sociopath in No Country For Old Men. And I cheered when they...
**SPOILER**
...killed the protagonist...nobody does that...we weren't allowed to do that...now we never know!
What kills the suspense in most dramatic scenes is that you know ultimately the protagonist is going to be okay. Now, as far as Coen stories go, we'll never be sure!
re: obsession
I'd respond with something witty but Joel Coen is leaving Chans Chinese Restaurant as I type, and I'm not talented enough to type AND take photographs AND follow Joel at a safe distance AND keep both hands down the front of my pants.......
Okay, the three top vote getters are already Fargo (Number ONE!), The Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona, three of their weakest films.
What's the point of continuing?
Have a nice day.
