+ Maddin, a master (Telluride Silver Medal for lifetime achievement)--honestly, have you people really seen his films?
- Romero, a journeyman (the same stuff, over and over and over and over)

WAS: "Maddin, a master (Telluride Silver Medal for lifetime achievement)"<

Okay, for your pleasure, I'll pretend for a moment that this award makes him a master....

>"--honestly, have you people really seen his films?"<

I'm fairly sure Sloany's seen a couple.

Here's what I've seen, in order by preference...

___The Thoroughly Well-Liked by me:

'Cowards Bend the Knee'; 'My Winnipeg'; 'Careful'.

___The Liked-with-Significant-Reservations:

'Tales from the Gimli Hospital'; 'Brand Upon the Brain'; ' The Saddest Music in the World'; 'Twilight of the Ice Nymphs'.

___The Puzzled / Irritated by:

'Keyhole'; 'Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary'

Major shortcoming of mine: I've only seen a couple of his short films. Not enough to go on there to form a judgement.
A minor if highly original talent (one could say "visionary" as much as David Lynch, and Maddin grows as tiresomely odd-for-oddness'-sake as Lynch) who intrigues and annoys me in varying proportion, from one scene to the next. His Dracula adaptation was the only one that was almost pure annoyance from one end to the other.

JB: Telluride Medals are considerably harder to come by than most other awards--only two or three per year.

There are few short films by anyone as good as Heart Of the World.

I don't see "oddness for oddness sake" with Maddin (for that matter, I don't with Lynch either) but rather a highly distinctive and idiosyncratic style that I find quite bracing--particularly with his subject matter. He and Cronenberg capture something very curious and interesting about the Canadian character--as does, in a different way but equally idiosyncratically, Robertson Davies.

I haven't see the Dracula as yet, and I see that you didn't mention Archangel. Among the ones above, only The Saddest Music In The World didn't quite work for me--and I've only seen it once.

To my mind, a major talent, and a distinctive and original stylist. And how many genuine surrealists do we have these days?

Re: genuine surrealists today in film? All depends on how wide we want to expand the term. To include Dario Argento? Wider to include Spike Jonze? Wider still to include the Coen brothers? And as you may know already, I consider much of Alain Resnais's work very surrealist-inspired.

And you're right, I haven't seen 'Archangel'. So you think that's one of Maddin's better ones?

Some of the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion winners I had to look up, because I'd never heard of the honor before:

David Fincher, Jean Simmons, Jan Troell, George Clooney, Pierre Étaix, Tilda Swinton, Anouk Aimée, Viggo Mortensen, Margarethe von Trotta, Daniel Day-Lewis, Michel Legrand, Shyam Benegal, Leonard Maltin, Walter Murch, Penélope Cruz, Rolf de Heer, David Thomson, Catherine Breillat, Om Puri, Ken Russell, Catherine Deneuve, David Lynch, Philip Glass, John Schlesinger, Zhang Yimou, The Surrealists (Jan Švankmajer, Guy Maddin and Brothers Quay), Andrew Sarris, Pedro Almodóvar, Cab Calloway, Henry Hathaway, Andrzej Wajda... lots of others, high and low and all point 'tween.
It's recognizing talent and what people like, it's not a symbol of having graduated to being a master.

After William,

Raoul Walsh - 7
Guy Maddin - 2
George A. Romero - 7
W.S. Van Dyke - 3
Jacques Demy 5
Howard Hawks - 8

Plus Zombie with the lot
Minus - seeing as how I've only seen 2 films of Maddin's, and the rest of the list is either completely unknown to me or I like, I reckon the fair thing to do is abstain.

JB: Re: Telluride: A far more select group than (as Addison DeWitt would say) that film society in Hollywood. And certainly not driven by popularity--Telluride is a film festival for film lovers, not business--quite purist (a trait it shares with Pordenone.)

Re: surrealists: Argento? Borderline. Jonze? Credit to Charlie Kaufman there. Coen brothers? A global reaction would be to say absolutely, there are definite surrealist elements there, and at least one film (Barton Fink) is surrealist through and through. Resnais? Absolutely. I've always considered Marienbad a surrealist film.

Speaking of surrealist films, have you ever seen Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life?

It's Plus 1/ Minus 1. If one of the previous contestants is at 0 or 10, you have to replace it with a new film director with a base score of 5.

Jacques Demy 5
Federico Fellini - 5
Uwe Boll - 3

After sticking pins in the Boll Doll,

Raoul Walsh - 7
George A. Romero - 10 (Thank BLANK for that!)
W.S. Van Dyke - 3
Jacques Demy 5
Federico Fellini - 5
Uwe Boll - 2

Plus Romero ascends.
Minus Boll is so much worse than Romero, that I really should question the taste of the guy that questioned mine...but I won't, coz "that's the kind of guy I am, right, weird, right." (One thousand dollars to whoever can name the character I am quoting)
