No likey 'Near Dark', Sloany?
See, that's where I meant to disagree with you on another thread the other day, where you said 'Aliens' was Bill Paxton's finest hour. I immediately thought of 'Near Dark' as one that bested 'Aliens', and here I go saying it, stepping on your toes and making you *awful*! 'Near Dark' is a near-classic.
Put that on your DVD blurb and smoke it.

Funny thing is, I own it! And like it! And need to watch it again!!

JB: I quite agree about Near Dark--something of a genre classic. Paxton gives us one of the most interesting vampires in film.

Could be I'm overrating it from memory. It's been roughly a dozen years or more since my last visit 'Near Dark'. I was impressed by the western-vamp crossover. Go figure, I've seen the first 'Terminator' three times since then, so I'm overdue for penance, no doubt about it.

Minus Dawn of the Crazies from Planet Terror: The Remake!
Plus Dawn of the Bride of the Evil Dead: Part 2

Arkin'! I went to the store with the intent of renting 'Phantasm' (haven't seen it since it came out - remember near nada). Saw it (thought I did), grabbed it, rented some others, and driving home I notice that I bloody rented 'Phantasm 2'! Oh well, never seen it, so there's that, but I really wanted to watch the original tonight.

May a tall man throw deadly silver spheres at my cursed eyes!!

Just wondering why Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness are here, but not the first Evil Dead. Not that you need all three, just wondering...

Also even though I know it's not on the list, I keep looking for Peter Jackson's Dead/Alive. Man I love that film, gross and funny as hell.

Q,

Currently we have 44 titles, meaning it's past time that I add the first request (by Will(i)am. Smith: 'Blood from the Mummy's Tomb',) and the next free spot is reserved for your request: 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors', is that right?

I could add the first 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', though, which may have a better chance of being voted on by others. Don't let me influence your choice, but that is the strategy Emma's using on 'Resident Evil', so I thought I'd throwing that out there as a possibility.

Looks like Grindhouse: 'Planet Terror' may be the next to fall. I hope it departs sooner than 'Tales from the Crypt', because that movie (from the early '70s, nothing really to do with the TV series by the way) is really good.

Minus3 A Classic re-made.
Plus2 The Classic in it's original form.
Plus1 Not even close to a classic...but what do they know, huh? Go Bubba!

William, you say, "I am dreadfully tired of the Romero-inspired brand of zombie in general, and one might as well start voting down as close to the original as possible."

I ask, why are you voting down 'Dawn of the Dead'? If one were to get "as close to the original as possible", wouldn't 'Night of the Living Dead' be the target?

Jonathan says:
Since 'Night of the Living Dead' was an inspiration to practically every low-budget filmmaker worldwide in the 1970s and onward, regardless of genre, I think it's awfully mistaken to disparage 'the originator', even if it were on the list, unless one truly hated it!
The influence goes far beyond zombie flicks, and I'm sure some of the things Romero's style have influenced are more to WAS's liking than 'Resident Evil' or whatever else in the splatter-gore zombie niche.
I know Mr. Smith doesn't hate 'Dawn' ('79) -- so I cannot accept the downvoting on logical grounds.

As I've already mentioned in WAS's earshot -- but given how much my points usually fall on deaf ears there, I oughtn't be surprised -- it's a logical fallacy to blame Romero for all the bad copycats, just as it would be in error to blame Hitchcock for all the bad imitations, to blame Godard for all the copycat 'provocateurs' void of an iota of the intellect Godard had, or any number of other influential directors.

Perhaps also Romero's films aren't "as close to the original as possible." 'White Zombie' is often credited as the first zombie flic. This is often disputed using 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' as an example, though this film has more of an sleepwalker aspect than a deadwalker aspect.

In some respects, Frankenstein's monster is also a zombie - the once dead, now alive.

Jonathan says:
'White Zombie' (which, aside from a few sequences is a pretty bad movie) was released a year after Whale's 'Frankenstein'.

Here you can watch all of the first "reanimated corpse" movie -- Electrician Thomas A. Edison's 'Frankenstein' (1910)!:

As for the first flesh-eating zombie movie?
I'm no expert on that, but I do know the 1964 version of 'I Am Legend' (huge inspiration to Romero) was made into a so-so Italian movie with Vincent Price, 'The Last Man on Earth', which mostly played off the vampire mythology. But those hungry deadites were fairly zombified in that movie if I remember right.
