After PoM

Francis Ford Coppola - 5
James Cameron - 2
Guy Maddin - 6
George A. Romero - 5
W.S. Van Dyke - 5
Alain Resnais - 5

- Romero (one-note satire at best)
+ Coppola (variable, but when he's on, few can challenge him--and the wines aren't bad, either)

Adding a favorite--Resnais

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 17, 2012 7:54:40 AM PDT
WAS: Coppola vs. Resnais? You may have caused a big fight about to incinerate in my mind.

And I say it with love.

A fall guy to get Coppola into the pantheon by any other name.
If you wanted another director who made a movie named 'Avatar', you could have gone with Carmine Gallone, Premankur Atorthy, Lazare Iglesis, or Jian Hong Kuo.

Sorry about that. William added on Alain Resnais, and I figured, "Well, we have enough people helping out Coppola, might as well give some appreciation to Resnais."

C. J. Vasta says:
To be fair, Shaylaman might have been a contender if he had stopped making movies after Unbreakable. After some disappointments, he started blatantly pandering with the Happening. (And that's a even better Cameron connection. They both made enviromental thrillers about trees killing people. I'm sorry I didn't think of it last night.)

As to your suggestions, there is the slight problem I never heard of those people. If I were guilty of the strategery you accuse me of I would have piclked someone I thought you and Sloany would vote against, it would have made more sense to go with say Ridley Scott.

PoM: Coppola needs all the help he can get. While I admit that he has a few stinkers, his best is among the best--and his best is better than the best of several who have ascended (Hathaway? Jonze?)

CJV: Re: Van Dyke: does it help to know that he directed The Thin Man and most of the sequels--Rose-Marie--and Naughty Marietta?

A Hollywood vet with great style. An unsung auteur.

Neither had I before I typed them! Oh, I'd heard of Jian Hong Kuo and Carmine Gallone, but I don't know anything about their work.
You're right, it's best to pick directors we know something about.

Shyamalan is the least good director on this list to me. Coppola has made the most horrible movies though, and Maddin gives him a run for his money for worst vampire movie.
