+The Dude

Last night I read a horrible book. But it did have this little golden nugget of wisdom...

"It [The Big Lebowski] was one of my favorite movies. So much so, it was a friend test. If you didn't like The Dude and Lebowski, then you could be a friend but would never be a good friend. Ever."

+ Simple songs to salve the soul, profound ditties for Pedro, for Eli, for all the little folkies out there....(it is indeed a hard world for little things, and it's getting harder every day):

"There's a dark and a troubled side of life;
There's a bright and a sunny side, too;
Tho' we meet with the darkness and strife,
The sunny side we also may view.

[chorus]
Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life;
It will help us ev'ry day, it will brighten all the way,
If we keep on the sunny side of life. [/c]

Tho' the storm in its fury break today,
Crushing hopes that we cherished so dear,
Storm and cloud will in time pass away,
The sun again will shine bright and clear.

Let us greet with a song of hope each day,
Tho' the moments be cloudy or fair;
Let us trust in our Savior alway,
Who keepeth everyone in His care."

~
And remember vote 'Pass-the-Biscuits' Pappy O'Daniel in for a second term, and he'd sure 'preciate it if you ate his farina!
~
And lastly, to quote "Llewyn Davis" in the Coen's new screenplay for their next movie, 'Inside Llewyn Davis':

"...if it was never new, and it never gets old, then it's a folk song."

O'Brother, Where art Thou?...or in other words, where is JB?

In reply to an earlier post on May 19, 2012 8:34:26 AM PDT
J. Baker says:
O'Brother, Where art Thou?...or in other words, where is JB?"<

I dun R-U-N-O-F-T, but don't worry, I wasn't turned into a horny toad or nothing.
Reality has smacked me upside the bean with a thick branch, however, and is hollering "It's all about the money!!"

See, I don't have a kind, interpretive-dancing landlord as the Dude was fortunate enough to have, at his Venice Beach pad.

I've had to reckon with some human paraquats in my time, re: landlords.
This current one may be the worst yet.... he knew I was in the book business, and I told him for months how many books I had, and yet while sending over some morons to pee on my rug - er, I mean inspect the place - and check that fire safety is being maintained, they wrote up some nonsense that I was endangering the building by having some book stacks over 5'ft high, and that it was encouraging infestation (I keep an OCD-level clean house, and I have a thing against dust and grime! It's laughable, man! It don't matter to Jesus. . .) -- damn landlord's got lawyer's on the case now threatening me with 3-day eviction. I believe that qualifies as "Self-Help Eviction" under California law for Landlords, and that means this lawyer is either a liar or incompetent. They'd be breaking the law to evict me under those false charges.

Gotta get me Bill Kunstler‎... or Ron Kuby. Damn fascists. It's 'Fahrenheit 451' all over again, going after the book people.
It's no laughing matter, unfortunately, as I don't have a lawyer, and I've never heard of a Tenet's Rights lawyer working pro bono.

I had to get a 3rd storage locker the other day, (that's right, I have Three big ones now for my books, records, videos, etc.!) That's something I can't afford for more than a Month. I had a bad feeling last week that it might come to this.
I've been sleeping nary a wink, and working nonstop transporting my inventory, and it's going to be this way for the next few days at least, putting my business at a complete standstill (as if I wasn't having enough problems with Amazon screwing me around!)

But I probably shouldn't have called the inspectors a bunch of àsshøles (even though, they did do roadie work for Metallica.)

Moral of this story: when life gets tragic, insert Dudly wisdom to keep the absurdity all in proper perspective.

Or, 'O Brother' works fine too...

(Tommy Johnson describing what my landlord looks and sounds like:)

Pete: "I've always wondered, what's the devil look like?"
Ulysses Everett McGill: "Well, there are all manner of lesser imps and demons, Pete, but the great Satan hisself is red and scaly with a bifurcated tail, and he carries a hay fork."
-
Tommy Johnson: "Oh, no. No, sir. He's white, as white as you folks, with empty eyes and a big hollow voice. He likes to travel around with a mean old hound. That's right."

And, as the poet Eddie Murphy said, in his finest work:

"C - I - L - L
...My
Landlord."

Thanks. I don't know where I stand with this guy; he's basically letting the lawyer handle it, not listening to reason.

One of the great old wives tales that most people are led to believe (especially landlords, who are usually dumber than a bag of hammers) is that books are a fire hazard.
That's nonsense.
Without a massive conflagration already in effect, or some fuel to accelerate the burning, books are really one of the *least* flammable things in a place.
Sofas, draps, most plastic, carpet - so many things they would find acceptable are far more likely to burn.
And what's more, I have only the safest appliances, I don't use candles or space heaters, I don't smoke... I don't see any possibility of a fire being started here except from someone else's deliberate arson.

No need to send him any surprises in the mail, or get all Dundee on his azz quite yet.
Thanks for the offer though, mate. It's appreciated!
