WAS: I agree. Having seen Apocalypse Now just a few days ago, it's already in my list of the ten best films of all time. I much prefer it to The Godfather.

Then again, I think Resnais' best outranks Coppola's best by a slight margin.

J. Baker says:
After Emma,

Francis Ford Coppola - 7
M. Night Shyamalan -4
Guy Maddin - 6
George A. Romero - 5
W.S. Van Dyke - 4
Alain Resnais - 8

- ...considering Coppola was down to 1 point not so long ago, I'm really making you guys work for it! I still consider the bulk of his career a crime against cinema, and something that drags down whatever's good about his early work.

+ do I need to say it? I prefer Resnais to every other living filmmaker by an enormous margin. Never a mediocre movie, never anything in his works short of fascinating, rigorously intelligent, and something that looks other-worldly ahead-of-its-time compared to every other movie out there today.

Oz le Fou says:
After need he say it?,

Francis Ford Coppola - 7
M. Night Shyamalan -3
Guy Maddin - 6
George A. Romero - 6
W.S. Van Dyke - 4
Alain Resnais - 8

Plus The persistent zombie
Minus M. Night

I think Ridley Scott is overrated, yes'm I do. That doesn't automatically equate to me disliking his films, especially not with a passion. When I say overrated, I am saying "not as good as made out to be." I am not saying "crap".

After Sloany:

Francis Ford Coppola - 8
M. Night Shyamalan -2
Guy Maddin - 6
George A. Romero - 6
W.S. Van Dyke - 4
Alain Resnais - 8

+ Coppola (just so William can vote here knowing Coppola moves up today, that is, if Emma votes for our dear Francis)
- Shyamalan

After Muppets

Guy Maddin - 6
George A. Romero - 6
W.S. Van Dyke - 3
Alain Resnais - 8

+Coppola [Granted the entire collection is not 100% gold. However, for me, the shining moments sufficiently compensate for the dark times.]
-Van Dyke

After EmJ

Francis Ford Coppola - 10
M. Night Shyamalan -2
Guy Maddin - 6
George A. Romero - 5
W.S. Van Dyke - 3
Alain Resnais - 8

Coppola + and ascends!
Romero -1

And I hope to see Resnais ascend today as well. Romero, however--now there are crimes against cinema, not to mention good taste. :)

After PoM

Raoul Walsh - 7
Guy Maddin - 5
George A. Romero - 4
W.S. Van Dyke - 4
Alain Resnais - 9
Howard Hawks - 5

Adding the quintessential Hollywood protean auteur, Howard Hawks

+ van Dyke (solid work consistently, and The Thin Man--a jewel)
- Romero

J. Baker says:
After WAS goes for a stylish journeymen after giving me grief over picking a genuine master autour in Henry Hathaway, every bit the equal if not superior to Hawks,

Raoul Walsh - 7
Guy Maddin - 4
George A. Romero - 5
W.S. Van Dyke - 4
Alain Resnais - 9
Howard Hawks - 5

- Guy Maddin. Some interesting movies, mostly interesting failures, some uninteresting failures. Decidedly the weakest on the list currently.
+ More than zombies. Romero is a minor master. See 'The Dark Half' for one underrated example. Better than any Stephen King movie deserves to be.

After more than a zombie,

Raoul Walsh - 7
Guy Maddin - 3
George A. Romero - 6
W.S. Van Dyke - 4
Alain Resnais - 9
Howard Hawks - 5

Plus Romero - What budget? We don't need no stinkin' budget!
Minus Maddin - Certainly interesting. Myself, I haven't been floored by the work I have seen. Granted, it's not much, but I dig Raoul, Hawks, (what I have seen - been able to see - of) Resnais, and know dwick of Van Dyke.

Nothing yet pressing enough for me to down vote.
